Earning Spells

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:51 am

Does anyone know how spells will work in skyrim? In Oblivion you had to buy them. Not really sure how much sense that makes, buying spells. Shouldn't you learn them or get taught them or something? Will you get some only by leveling up while others you can only find on the market?

In Oblivion you had to buy them.

Not only buy them but also create them, cast from scrolls receive from quest, and with mods even more ways to receive spell.

.
You purchase magical formula for spell, but yes it looks not so role playing from other side.
Use your imagination or some nice mods.

Question how that will be done in game, thats know only developers for now, but I believe magic in markets now will be more rare since we have no more Mage Guild and Skyrim engaged in civil war.
Perhaps more explorations in ruins for valuable old magic that we cant create by own before reach some point in magic skills?
Some old manuscripts or rare teachers, some magic black markets with nice spells and large cost?

Buying them makes some sense, as they could be scrolls you then learn. I guess some might come as you level up, some you might find, some will be perks and others quest rewards.

I'd like to see a system where you are taught the spells. Spell merchants could simply be replaced by spell teachers, who you pay to teach you the spells (a tiny change, admittedly.) But on top of this the Mages Guild (or modern equivalent) will have lots of teachers, who are easy to find, and will teach members for less. The most powerful spells should only be available from certain individuals, who you would have to track down in a quest, and then earn their trust and the right to learn the spell by performing errands for them.

You could only create spells using spell effects you already knew.

I hope you don't just get some (or even get to pick one) when you level up.
This is done in Dragon Age which is fine, but I don't want that in TES.

The buying part, I always thought of it more as paying someone to teach you the spell.

I'm hoping the spell tomes DLC from Oblivion ends up becoming a fully-integrated part of Skyrim's magic system. Have spell merchants sell the books instead of just selling the spell, and make them more a part of the loot table of mage-themed dungeons.

So you want to change the term Spell Merchant to Spell Teacher and leave the actual pay gold to get spells mechanic? Done, as I don't recall anyone you could buy spells from calling themselves Spell anythings. They were just Merchants who sold their knowledge (read: taught) of spells for money. As far as more people specializing in certain spells that would be good idea.

Pretty much, yeah. I know it's a tiny change to make, but I think it would still be a nice touch.

Technically, it's not "buying" spells. You needed to have a certain amount of skill to be able to use it after you buy it. So , in a sense, the correct interpretation is "paying for being taught a particular spell". They could do the clueless a favor by not allowing you to buy a spell if your skill level is to low for it.
