Unable to get DX8 device caps

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:33 am

So I tried to start Morrowind a few minutes ago and I got a strange error. I started Morrowind through Morrowind Script Extender as I always do but when the game tried to start I got an error box reading "Unable to get DX8 device caps". I don't know exactly what that means but I figured that is has something to do with Directx 8. So I reinstalled Directx 8, but the error persisted. I thought about uninstalling and rfeinstalling Morrowind but if it's a Directx problem that probably wouldn't help much. Does anyone know what is going on here and how to fix it?

Edit-I just tried launching Morrowind again and got the same error, only this time I noticed that the top of the error box says "MGE Error". My apologies in advance if I posted this in the wrong place.

Post a dxdiag report please.

Start menu >> Run... (or use Search bar) >> type: dxdiag . When the program finishes click the Save All Information button. Open the dxdiag.txt and copy & paste its contents here in a reply.

I figured out what the problem was. Earlier today I ran Windows Update. One of the updates was a driver update for my graphics card, which failed to install. I was finally able to track down the driver online. I installed it manually and everything works normally again.

I've been caught in that trap myself. Back when I was still on dial-up, I let Update install a modem driver. Now I always check and de-select any drivers in the list. Then I choose the "don't show me this damn thing again" option.

Since your problem is solved, I'll close this.
