Spears in Skyrim?

The recent GI describes how weapons will have more differentiating characteristics, giving you more reasons than generic damage output to choose between them in given circumstances. For instance, daggers will be particularly useful in stealth attacks. Some changes reflect a bit of realism: archery (inspired by an Oblivion mod) will require the archer to stand almost stationary to be accurate, but arrows will do far more damage. Additionally, characters will not be able to run backwards to "kite" enemies in combat.

All of this leads me to think of weapons that used to be in TES games and would make sense in Skyrim for role-playing reasons in line with the above changes: spears.

Aside from their utility in man-to-man* combat, spears would make much more sense when "fighting" wild animals and other dangerous beasts. Real world hunters don't engage their quarry in melee combat armed with swords, axes, daggers, etc. Traditional hunters use spears (when they don't use bows). Peasants would not often have swords or battle-axes, but would have spears, serving a dual role of hunting tool and weapon of war. For instance, the boar spear. The reach of the weapon and the ability of a thrusting weapon to pierce vital organs makes spears a preferable weapon for "fighting" dangerous beasts that can easily kill.

With the reduction of the number of skills in Skyrim, I guess this isn't likely. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

*humanoids such as humans, mer, beastfolk, goblins, daedra, etc.

Indeed, which is why I think all threads concerning spears should be directed to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1162054-you-want-spear/ and any future recreations of it.

Much easier to keep it all in one thread while simultaneously keeping it in the spotlight to let it be known that the majority of players want spears.

I agree fully but wait just a darn tooting moment they only removed 1 skill in magic. Also they talked about weap effects axes have different effects then maces making me think they will finaly split them back up. I like axes I can not wait to use a spear in my right hand and when they get past it hack them up with an axx.
