Do you *NEED* magic to survive?

Aside from using it to soultrap spells to myself, for the most part, I don't use it save for those times when you must levitate. I'd rather sleep heal than potion, and often take my lumps when it comes to enchanted beings or creatures.

That said, I do love my bow and arrows, and love enchanted arrows. I'll use silver ones until I reach about 80 with the skill, then shop for dire arrows. My favorites though are the ones from the Great Bazaar mod, which added Daedric Arrows of Soultrap. No more dealing with casting spells or enchanting swords. Just a luck shot, and soulgems are filled.

I went from lvl5 restoration to lvl25 in like 5 or so actual lvls. Just 'cause of the amount of times I use that restoration spell you get at the start.

In neither MW or OB or even DF did/do I use magic.

I prefer the gritty fight for survival of scrounging for health supplies, ingredients, beds...

healing or destruction spells are just too convienient for me to feel immersed.

Lore-wise, wizards like Divayith Fyr need it to continue living for lond periods of time.

Though, now that morrowind is destroyed, he is likely dead too. Well, then again, he's a master wizard. He likely teleported away.

Not in the Elder Scrolls universe. In TES potions (and Alchemy in general) are magical.

It's more of the "science" behind extracting and exploiting the magical properties of different ingredients.

I think magic and science are interchangeable in the TES universe because it's not about calling upon the abstract powers of the heavens and the underworld, like in most fantasy settings, it's more about understanding and harnessing the natural magicka that flows in us and around us.

Play Morrowind as an Orc Warrior. You'll do just as well as the High Elf Mage.

You will occasionally carry potions or scrolls, created my alchemy - a form of magic. Even warriors need to heal and teleport occasionally.

In Oblivion, my warrior-esque characters just use the spamheal you get at default. Beyond that, I don't need to.

In MW it can be considered even less necessary, as it was already mentioned you need to switch from weapon to magic completely.

So reading around lore and the like makes it seem as though you *NEED* magic of some kind to survive in tamriel... not just magic items, but you need to be able to use some sort of magic.

I prefer to play non-magic assassin-thieves, who rely on quick wits and feats of agility to bring them through the day... would it be impossible for such a one as that to actually accomplish anything in tamriel?

You don't NEED it, but magic can be anything from primary to complimentary which makes it VERY useful for ANY character. Some characters use primarily Destruction magic for their character whereas some may use Destruction for Weakness to Poison and then shoot their target with a poisoned arrow. Some might play the role of a Healer and heal their allies and themselves throughout battle whereas some may just use a little healing spell after battle. I could go ON and ON about this, but as I said before, some may use very little magic to compliment their blade or bow, but some may use every aspect of the 6 magic schools.

I recently tried playing as a mismatched Orc Thief. I built this character differently than any other in Morrowind, adding in his major and minor skills based upon his statistics. With the Lover sign, his agility was up over 60 so marksman, sneak and such were easy choices. Though the Orc also had Willpower of 50, I didn't chose any magic skills as the low Intelligence (30) meant little mana, and no multiplier in that direction. In the end I ended up with a character that leveled up too quickly and couldn't make use of magic or any intelligence based skill, i.e. alchemy, security what have you. To say this was more than an inconvenience is an understatement.

-Buying- all your potions is an expensive proposition, even while doing the thieves guild quests I was still losing massive sums of money to purchasing every kind of potion I might need going forward. These supplies also tended to run out rather quickly and with high Hit Points, resting a few hours or even a whole night couldn't restore all the health I'd lost. In order to RP effectively I had to "return to port" constantly to replenish my supplies and since I like to limit my resting to nights I was almost always in a low health status. Maybe surviving in this way would have been possible, but I found the non-magic/non-intelligence route just too cumbersome. Yeah My Orc was strong, he could bash anybodies skull in and he could sneak around but the character still felt incomplete. As far as Morrowind goes I'd never recommend NOT taking Alchemy as skill, being able to make your own potions is an invaluable if tedious occupation. And early on you're not going to have the money to buy everything you'll need. Well that's my thoughts on it anyway.

Well... If we are talking about "real TES" (a contradiction but nontheless) then the answer on small scale is: No.
A warrior can do just fine without magic, and usually does. A farmer can do just fine without magic.

However if no mer or man could use magic in the TES universe then the world would have been doomed long ago.
