What if it Flops?

hey guys im back. i just wanted to say this is by far the best community forum i have ever been part of, there are no trolls which is awesome. so, ive been doing a little more research and i have these concerns. i read the brink bible completely, but im not a very good reader since english isnt my first language, so a few things are still concerning me.

1) NO SHENANIGANS right? what i mean by that is M$ hasnt made some secret deal with SD that gives them first access to dlc right like cod and homefront RIGHT?

2) i dont really understand the abilities and how t hey work. again, i tried to read the bible, but i dont understand. so in the walkthrough for container city, the guy tells the person playing to upgrade his weapon. what im wondering is.... why wouldnt you want to upgrade your weapon?? why wouldnt you want to have a stronger weapon? like, i dont get it. so you can upgrade your gun, or your teammates guns at ANY time? so, when they die, cant you just upgrade it all over again? for example, in killzone 3, if you want to use your ability, you can use it, but once you use your ability, you have to wait for it to recharge. so, the medic in kiillzone 3 cant just go around reviving ppl all the time. you can do it once, but then you have to wait for it to recharge. im sorry if you dont understand me, but im really really curious about this.

3) how long are respawn times??? ive seen like 30 seconds?? that seems insane. no game ive ever played had a crazy respond time like that....
can someone plz fill me in on how respawn works?

again, thanks guys. this really is the best community ive ever seen, and i hope you guys can answer

1. Not that I know of.

2. Using abilities takes up supply pips. You can't just spam abilities all over the place. You'll run out of juice. Also, a lot of abilities have a cooldown time, so you can't use them repeatedly. I don't think the cooldown time applies to buffing your teammates though.

3. It's 20 seconds, not 30. When you are downed, a Medic can revive you or you can choose to respawn at a command post. The respawn timer continuously counts down from 20, and everyone who is waiting to respawn will do so when the timer reaches 0. This way you spawn in waves instead of individually.

1: Impossible. Splash Damage was originally PC only, so I doubt they will trump any other platforms in favor of *shudder* Microsoft.

2: I don't understand them to well either, but I'll try and help. When you are customizing your character, you can add special abilities that work similar to perks in CoD. Also, I'm not sure on this, but the gun buffing might only last one clip of the gun, or only for a couple seconds. And abilities also have recharge times, so don't worry about revive spamming or constant buffs and heals.

3: When you die you have two options, wait for the reinforcements wave, which is a countdown timer for everyone when they can spawn again. So, if you die at the start of the wave, you have to wait 20 seconds to respawn. But let's say your friend dies when you are 10 seconds into the timer, he would only have to wait ten seconds. After the 20 seconds are over, everyone who died respawns, and then the counter starts again for the newly deceased. The second option is waiting for a medic to come and revive you. Not much to that one.

This my first post, and I'm not 100% sure about this game as I just started reading about it but I am already excited.
I just wanted to say, the re-spawn is 20 seconds, and as far as I can tell its more of a group re-spawn that every 20 seconds everyone dead can come back.
And I have played quite a bit of MAG which also uses this feature and I can say it works, it allows all of the players to come as a group and not lone wolves and in certain cases helps give the offense a break, It does take a while to get used to when most shooters have such short re-spawn times but it is easy to get used too!

but really, we won't be sure until DLC starts releasing, but i highly doubt it it would go against balance which they are holding to an utmost standard.

1. I doubt it. If there is DLC, PC might get it for free though, while Xbox and PS3 might have to pay.

2. There's a sort of energy bar you use up when you upgrade someone else's gun, so you can't spam weapon upgrades everywhere.

3. Its about 20 seconds, but its a continual timer. Lets say you die at second 19, then you'll only have 1 second until you spawn. That's if you die though. If you're just incapped, a medic can come revive you.

Try and watch the videos they released, and some interviews too. No one can explain better than the developers themselves.

Alrighty.

#2
You basically have an energy bar that's divided into 4 segments. Each time you use a class ability, it uses up one of these segments. So if you buff someone's gun and upgrade it, you'll lose one of these segments. If you put down a landmine, you'll lose one of these segments. Etc. This way you can't upgrade everyone's weapons like you have stated.

#3
When you get shot enough, you don't die right away. You lay down on the ground, sort of like "Last Stand" from Call of Duty, only you can't shoot at the enemy (without a specific ability). You'll then have 2 options - wait until a medic comes and revives you, or respawn. If you wait for a medic, they'll throw you a syringe and you'll have the option of using it and standing up to start the fight, don't.

Respawn is every 20 seconds, not 20 seconds after you die. So people can respawn at 0:20, 0:40, 1:00, 1:20, etc. So if you die at 0:58 seconds, you only have to wait 2 seconds to respawn. If you die at 1:01, you have to wait 19 seconds.

Note: I believe that attackers have a slightly shorter respawn time then defenders, to compensate for each of their roles.

It works just like that. Reviving, healing, gun buffing, giving ammo, that all uses up resources known as Supplies. Supplies are measured in Pips - evenly spaced gaps in the Supply bar. Buffing someone uses up one Supply Pip. Buffing yourself doesn't help the team as much, so it uses two Supply Pips. Supply Pips will regnerate slowly when you don't have full Supply Pips.

3) how long are respawn times??? ive seen like 30 seconds?? that seems insane. no game ive ever played had a crazy respond time like that....

20 secodns at the maximum. When your health drops to 0, you don't die - you get Incapacitated (Incapped). It's like a stage right before death. While incapped, you can choose to wait for a medic to revive you on the spot, or wait for the next repspawn wave. While Incapped, enemies can still shoot you to kill your for real, where you're dead dead and medics can't revive you - you're forced to wait for the respawn wave.

Respawn waves are like a respawn time for the whole team. It starts at 20 seconds, counts down, and when it hits 0, it resets to 20 and respawns everyone on that team. If I die when the timer is at 19, I wait 19 seconds. If Joe Schmoe dies when the time is at 2 seconds, Joe Schmoe repsawns in 2 seconds, along with me, because I'm dead too. When we respawn, we respawn at the same time.

EDIT- well, at FRANKlyplaysGames

i have watched almost every video. like i said, english isnt my first language, so its difficult understanding to what some of them say.

ok. so no shennaningans, great.
i understand the energy bar, and does that bar work for just upgrades, or any other ability also? like giving out ammo , etc.
and about the respawn timer. i kinda get it now. so theres a timer every 20 seconds, and if you so happen to die at second 19, you will only have 1 sec left to spawn? and is is kinda like killzone, where if your not completely dead, you get revived?

and when medic revives you, does that take up some of there " juice"

For #3 - it goes like this. Match starts, the count down from 20 starts then. It will constantly count down 20 to 0, and restart. Anyone who dies during one of these 20 second count downs will respawn when the timer hits 0.

This is, of course, if you're "dead" - when you are first taken to 0 life, you are simply incapacitated, this gives you the option to wait for a medic to revive you, or, to choose to respawn with the above mentioned 20 second timer waves, however, this option will start you back at the main base, rather than reviving you on the spot.

Ah, I must of missed those parts.
Also, when you are "downed" you can still die for reals, you can only be revived when you are down. If someone shoots you a couple times when you are down, you will be forced to respawn and cannot be revived.

If you had Xbox LIVE or PSN, I suggest you look up the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars demo. ET:QW was made by Splash Damage (the guys making Brink), features very similar if not identical classes, and it has a nice tutorial that explains how the classes work, along with some of the abilities.

As for "why wouldn't you want to have upgraded weapons", yes, that is exactly what Splash Damage wants you to think. You want to have upgraded weapons and health (Engineer and Medic Abilities, respectively). That encourages you and your teammates to be nice to each other. You also get "bribed" with XP for helping your teammates that way, which gives more XP than killing bad guys (but not as much as completing objectives).

We're still learning about Abilities (some of our information, such as some from the Compendium, is outdated; in other cases, they just haven't been revealed and explained yet), so don't wig out that you don't understand. We're all in the same boat at the moment. That's why we're here; sharing the information and learning as we go together.

Speaking from the ET:QW demo, Medics can pass out heals that restore a chunk of health in an ally or yourself, but you only have a certain amount "in stock" if you will. Once you use that ability, it begins to recharge (slowly) to make sure you can't spam heals. Soldiers can only place one explosive charge at a time, so you can't blow up four destroyables in thirty seconds.

And I highly doubt Brink will "flop". Brink isn't looking for the commercial success on the level of COD or Halo (although that would be amazing if it did). I get the vibe from Splash Damage that they are looking for a tightknit core community of gamers who play Brink consistently and enjoy it. The playstyle (team-based, class-based, multiple simultaneous context-sensitive objectives) is something new and not really mainstream, but that's the challenge for us veteran forum-goers: we want something different and innovative. It's already a success in my mind; we just have yet to see the actual numbers of sales and money made from it.
