Problem installing GECK

Post » Mon May 16, 2011 11:32 pm

Okay, I downloaded the geck and installed it. When I try to open th program it displays an error message that reads " GECK.exe unable to locate Component. This application has failed to start because d3dx9_38.dll was not found. Re-installing the app may fix this program."

:brokencomputer: I tried re-installing it but I get the same message. Can anyone help?

You must install it to the same folder as the one your fallout.exe is in. Usually this is \Fallout3.

Then you should patch it to version 1,5.

I applied the update but it says "missing or invalid registry/INI entry"

Did you uninstall it using the control panel's add/remove programs tool? I haven't heard of that error before, but it sounds like that might be the reason. I don't think the Geck has its own uninstall program, so you'd have to use the OS's to clean out the registry settings before doing a fresh install of the Geck. If you have Vista or Windows 7, try running the install and update programs as Administrator (right click on them and choose run as administrator). Other than that, I don't really know.

Both those issues sound like you installed it to the wrong place. Do you have it through steam or alone? You must install the GECK to the folder containing Fallout.exe which is (if you dont have steam) "Bethesda Softworks/Fallout 3"

Wrong both of you. You need to update your Direct X.

d3dx9_38.dll is a Direct X related file.

You can find that file at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?familyId=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displayLang=en
Click on "Start Your Download" at the top of the page.
Click "RUN."
It will then scan your system and download DX 9 files.
It will then ask you to continue to install those files.
It only takes a few minutes to install all of them.
Then you are good to go, but if you get anymore errors, you probably don't have it installed in your Fallout 3 folder.

REMEMBER..YOU NEED FALLOUT 3 ALREADY INSTALLED TO USE G.E.C.K.!

Yea this makes me still think he has it installed in the wrong place. Make sure its installed properly, then go update your Direct X. Well, do that anyway as its always a good idea to have DX up to date.

You can also get this error if you haven't installed the game or have a pirated copy. I'm not saying you do, mind you.

You cannot mod the 360 or ps3. The geck is only for the PC. It breaks several EULA agreements you agree to in order to use those consols, and is not supported here on the forums.

It's not legal so we don't discuss it here.
