I am using a macbook air 2011 model and I am also using an Imac 27" C2D 4GB DDR3 and for some reason the site just doesn't feel as smooth as other sites I have been on. Mainly in the scrolling . It seems that it just chugs along, its not enough that it breaks the feel but its certainly enough to feel and say "OK, this isn't running completely smooth". Now sure, macs are not top of the line in terms of specs but whats a guy to do? Get on my £4000 rig just to get super smooth response on this forums? No lol.

However I am not knocking this site, just stating my experiences with the forums and nothing else. I know 90% of you are gonna say you are not having no problems and thats fine, I have also tried Safari & google chrome they are my only browsers I will ever use and its still very much the same. Maybe its a WEBKIT thing? Who knows.

Just my experience, anyone else care to share?

Thanks!

It's not a Webkit thing, many members have had issues with it across all browsers and rendering engines. The site is incredibly poorly designed and optimized (from a technical perspective)

The main causes for the slowdown are the stalker bar (the bar at the top of the screen that follows you as you scroll) and all the transparencies used on all the images. It causes the rendering engine to render multiple layers of items at the same time, and scrolling makes it all worse since the stalker bar moves.

Also there is what appears to be a pointless SWF file loading at the bottom of every page whose only purpose is to allow Adobe Flash svck up some resources. Some people have also had issues with the sheer number of javascripts loading.

Solution? Switch to the IP.Board theme, it does away with all the transparencies and greatly decreases the site's use of your CPU. I'm running a slightly modified version of it.

I agree it's not fast...changing pages takes a few clicks so to speak.

Yes. Sometimes it takes damn long for a page to load. As if was back on dial up :cold: Usually after submitting or editing a post.

I'm fine with it since I turned a bunch of scripts and stuff off. I really notice the difference whenever I have to browse on a different computer, or with my personalised stuff turned off.

You should try it with a single-core Atom. It's like wading through bedrock.

I used to have a script that would lock the bar thing to the top of the screen which helped out a lot. Can't remember where to find it though.

http://www.gamesas.com/images/smilie/games/elderscrolls/elderscrolls-background.jpg is also one of the culprits (in community discussion and TES subforum - on other subforums it's other background images). After you block loading and displaying of background images scrolling is significantly less sluggish.

I use the IP Board skin, any performance issues disappear when I use it.

Well I am happy to hear I am not the only one encountering this problem, I can see what gamesas are trying to do with the site and in theory its an extremely good way to browse and use the forums, however its execution is something that obviously still needs some work.

Still very good forums none the less, lets hope it gets resolved, maybe come Skyrim we may see yet another workaround, I will carry on using these theme as I find the IP skin to be far less productive. But thanks very much for the tips, I just wanted to know that it wasn't just me! :o

I tried that and I don't like that skin so I went back to the sluggish theme... :ermm:

You can modify it easily enough through a style sheet for Opera (built-in functionality), Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/), and Chrome (https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe)

Here's my alteration of it:

@charset "utf-8";/**Beth CSS *//* Changes the background of posts, topic listings, and a few other things to a very light blue*(slightly lighter than that found for .post_controls, which is what I based it off of)*/#forum_table, div.post_wrap, .row1, .post_block.row1, .row2, .row2 td, .post_block.row2, .post_block, .poll_question ol , .status_profile_actions, .recent_activity, .status_update{  background: #eaeff5 !important;}/* An even lighter blue for text boxes */.input_rte, .input_text, .input_textarea, #statusUpdate{  background: #f1f5f9 !important;}/* Changes the quotebox color to a very light green, changes every other topic in the listing to a very light green */div.blockquote, .row1 td, .friend_list ul, .off, .status_main_wrap{  background: #e9f4ee !important;}/* Adjusts padding of search options menu button */#search .choice{  min-width: 0px !important;}p.edit, pre.prettyprint{  background: Transparent !important;}

Meh. It's no more sluggish than any other forum for me when my BBerry modem has a good signal. As long as we're posting specs, I've got an Intel Dual-Core Duo processor 2.2ghz, and 4 gigs of RAM (not sure what kind). It isn't the best, but it's good, and it gets me through most sites and scrolling fairly unscathed.

I just installed this, looking good :goodjob: First time I used Stylish, going to change Facebook now.

Edit: Help, I just disabled Stylish and now the icon has disappeared from my Chrome toolbar and I can't find it anywhere in my settings

You can also use http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5459839/Chrome%20Extensions/BSF%20Tweaks/ExosBSFTweaks.crx, it doesn't fix the performance issues completely but it definitely makes scrolling a little smoother. :)

I'm actually working on a small update that should fix most of the issues with the site (Combining/removing image layers to eliminate transparent layer stacking, which is one of the most performance-heavy things on the site) If you download the extension from the link above it will auto-update when I release the new version.

You know that notification drop down menu (the one with number in it) at the top of each page? Sometimes, it works for me, most of the time it doesn't. I suspect that it's because of the backend server getting slow.
