An Oblivion Fan Just Got Morrowind

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:48 am

I started with Oblivion, and loved it. I have been hearing that Morrowind is better than Oblivion, Oblivion is terrible, etc. So I just got Morrowind.

Since I started with Oblivion, I have to admit that the graphics are an issue for me. They just take me out of the immersion. Are there any graphic overhauls that won't completely blow up my computer? :brokencomputer:

And are there any mods that I should get? Or should I just play the game vanilla before I start "fixing" things with mods?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players should make some thing clearer. Also, take a look at http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1173065-relz-morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics/, recently released modpack focusing on grahic and generally look of the game.

Besides that, I suggest playing without major game changers for the first time. Get into the game, play some time, and then decide what you want to change/fix. Happy playing!

Morrwind Overhaul is pretty much a must have if you care about graphics.

Just like oblivion there are a few essential programs for mod users. I would link all of them but im writing this on my Iphone so i'll just make you a list.

Wrye Mash (get the standalone version)
Mlox - this is like BOSS for oblivion
Morrowind patch project
MCP or morrowind code patch - grab this and just select everything.

Also here is a link to a very helpful walkthrough. Follow it!! You wont regret and will provide a solid base to work off

http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/p/morrowind-modding-guide.html

Then search for various mod lists on the forums here. There are 20 bazillion mods for mw and quite a few that stand out. Grab what you like and give yourself a few days to get it all fine tuned.

Good luck and dont hesitate to ask for more advice here.

Another vote for Morrowind Overhaul. That is all you need for your first play through. I don't recommend changing anything besides graphics the first time you play.

no, you'll enjoy it much more if you use mods from the beginning.

Among the ones I made, there is http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=136072&id=5685that I consider essential.
In MW there is not fast travel and you may spend many hours trying to find the cave/tomb you are looking for. With this mod, you may ask a scout to lead you there.

Here is moreover my list of suggesteed mods

Ugh, I swear, there needs to be a massive campaign to correct this misconception. Replacing the original textures with the current better ones will not slow you down, or anyone down for that matter. The only possible way for this to start happening is if you start using only textures that are 2048x2048 and over and even then that will soon be unlikely given the rate of tech progression with computers.

On the topic of actual things to get, if you are going to do any searching around, look for mesh replacers. In fact I recently did one for the kegstands, you can find it on PES or TESNexus.

Along with links to other player's 'Favourite Lists' and threads full of info.
Includes info on how to find popular mods, and the mods that you want.

Well, for the graphics there are 2 choices:

- http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8987, it's a compilation that includes pretty much all the most common and important graphics mods. It includes only graphics mods, so nothing will be changed.
- Another possibility is to personally choose your preferred mods, in that case you will be helped by the cool lists/guides here. Obviously this is the best choice, because you will have Morrowind exactly how you want it. But this choice is so much more long and difficult - at the beginning -.

It's up to you.

Anyway if you decide to use Morrowind Overhaul take in consideration that it's a compilation and you may want to change someting. If so, please read the http://morrowindoverhaul.net/mgso/guide/eng/mo_persguide.pdf I made.

Cheers!

For me, I've played through Morrowind 3 times before using mods outside of fixes. First time was straight vanilla without expansions (and with heavy cheating) just to get a feel of what I was doing - took me about 2 weeks and I wasn't really all that interested. Second time, I included the expansions, limited the cheating, and focused on actually playing - took me about a month. Third time, was with expansions, no cheating, and UESP open to get as much out of the game as possible - took me about 6 months and ended at like level 79 or something.

After that, I played some Oblivion. Now, it is so painful to get back into Morrowind because of playing Oblivion. The Overhaul (by KingPix and friends) has simplified many things... but the game just seems to start off too slow. Oblivion has ruined me!

Anyway, the basis of what I wish to get at, I can see the usefulness of playing vanilla prior to using mods. However, since prior exposure to Oblivion can ruin the experience, I highly suggest something like the Overhaul for the graphics at this point (haven't tried the rebirth) and nothing extra just yet. Morrowind is vast and the mod-base is vaster. Just focus on playing and not exactly on what you are playing. Morrowind is strange in that you need to play - to learn to play how you would like to play - so that you can play and enjoy it. Just be patient as I guarantee it is a rewarding experience.

MGE makes the game look way better. If you got a PC good enough, it can look much better than Oblivion too.

Morrowind has no fancy physics and seamless animations, but all else can be fixed (talking about graphics here). Other than that, Morrowind, even Vanilla, has atmosphere that Oblivion's one cannot even hope to compare to, and when you combine that with quests and all other stuff Morrowind has, add MGE and MCP and few other things that people mentioned, you'll have a game better than Oblivion in all aspects.

I'd also recommend Dirnae's animations. While I don't see anything wrong with original animations and think people are too spoiled, he made some walking and running animations that look really good, so you might like them a lot. BB and BC are also considered a must haves, they replacer bodies and clothings to look more seamless. http://www.psychodogstudios.net/
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2735 will replace the ugly faces but you can do further search, since this is not the only known good replacer.

However, it's a bit stupid to come from a game to it's 4 years older prequel and be shocked by it's graphics, but ok.

Morrowind Overhaul gets another vote. It's simple to install, KINGPIX is amazing when it comes to giving help or advice, and it makes the game even prettier that Oblivion. The only other mod I would recommend looking into is a mod that reduces the miss rate for combat. Combat was one of the things that Oblivion did better than Morrowind (though I wouldn't call either combat experience stellar), and for an Oblivion player the relatively high miss chance might be really annoying.

Other than that, Morrowind still holds its own as a stellar game without the need for mods. There are waaay more quests than Oblivion, so you won't run out of things to do for a long time.

I have an Radeon 5750, a dual core 2.0 GHz processor, and 3 GB RAM. At my monitor's max resolution of 1400 x 900, I experience minor stuttering outdoors, but I'm still tweaking the settings.

Kingpix is being modest when he said choosing your own stuff is better, its not unless you have been modding MW for a while and have build up a collection over the months/years. There are so many mods in the Overhaul it would take days to get anything like it on your own, and that assumes you knew what you were doing, how to use all the tools, etc Not likely. Plus just because you use his overhaul does not mean you cant still pick other mods to augment or overwrite things in the Overhaul. I installed the Overhaul and then installed Connary texture packs over it. I even used the BSA tool included in the Overhaul to help.

Also those programs people are recommending, except for Wyre they all come with the overhaul! It really is that fantastic. And best of all its only for the look and sound of the game, no gameplay stuff, completely vanilla gameplay.

Putting your own stuff together to get something comparable to the Morrowind Overhaul is only better if you really know what you're doing, because it's pretty easy to screw something up. So going with the Morrowind Overhaul (or just a smaller selection of mods) is probably smarter.

You really should spend hours upon hours putting something together from all of the mods that are available. It's very theraqeutic, although I know a lot of people do that and stop playing, lol.

I think I've been collecting mods (mostly graphical ones) for a year without playing properly now. :P

I do enjoy the act of seaching for and installing mods. I look foward to it with every Beth game almost as much as the game itself. With OB,FO3 and NV I play first with out mods(except for a few like UI mods or patches), just doing the main quest, then I check out the mods, mod the game to my taste and then play "for real". I will do the same for Skyrim and I hope Amular also has mods if so I will do the same for that game.

But with this said, things get more and more complex longer the game is out, in the case of MW its was just too overwhelming to try and go back and play the game after a 5 year hiatus. I no longer could tolerate the graphics but trying to make MW look good was just to hard, now with Morrowind Overhaul its much easier, OB is now the more difficult game to get back into in a way(though the graphics start way better so perhaps things even out). Anyway go with the overhaul.
