A useful companion, finally they have a use.

I just noticed and fixed it.

but in comment to your post, I agree no companion for me, but if they INSIST on "adding" companions these are the guys I'd like to have a choice from, but once again you don't have to use them. You can stay playing solo (like I probably will)

If they insist on adding companions than more the likely we won't have a choice but to get them forced upon us. Otherwise why waste the time on putting them in the game when alot of people don't want them nor would use them?

If they do force them upon us the companions need to be able to defend themselves and fight, I'm not going to cover for them.

hey its a great idea.

but I don't want Bethesda to bend backwards to make this happen :P if its easy to make why not but if it needs too much time then I would rather see that effort go to the quests game play instead

I don't like companions. At least not with bad AI and animations as previous Bethesda games have had.

Still, I prefer to travel alone. If there is a companion, let it be optional. You shouldn't be forced to have a companion, unless there's something really attached to the main quest.

It's a no for me. I see your point in making companions useful, but I'd probably find them annoying. If there were companions, I'd rather they focus on making them more in depth and realistic than being a stock "bard/artist" and whipping out their songbook/easel when I'd rather they muck in and help. IIRC there was a bard in Fable II that you could pay to sing about your deeds - nice for a one time only novelty, but I wouldn't want him hanging around.

IF you do that, he'd indeed write about your heinous deeds, but you own him so weather he tells people or not would be up to you.

So, you're assuming there is slavery in the game. Somehow I don't think so.

There are no Irish in Skyrim.

I don't really want a human or humanoid companion. It just doesn't sync with the way I play TES games. Personal opinion admittedly, and I think the option of having a follower is a great one.

I would love to have the option of a Dog though. Some tough-as-nails wolfhound or other war dog. Hell, even having the option to have a bear as a companion would be fantastic - this is Skyrim afterall.

I like the idea of having useful companions that don't participate in combat (and hopefully by themselves stay away far enough from it), like the bard, painter or writer. They should make some original, creative material, partly generated, partly pre-made by Bethesda! So, I voted yes.

Companions that I don't like are companions that either die in combat, return, die again, return, and in that way take immersion away (like in TES4), or companions that get lost all the time (like in TES3). They'd better not fight, I can handle it on my own!

In history the aristocracy would own scientist, musicians and the like. They wouldn't be slaves per se, but they were generally very loyal.

(as for the smilies while I understand your point, I was offering a cookie and seeing if anyone would bite, they did. :))

I think this idea is excellent. Shouldn't be too hard technically either, just a screenshot with some paint filter applied. It's a bit similart to Oblivion where they erected a statue of you in Bruma.

Companions shouldn't do that, it wouldn't make sense bringing someone with you just to make paintings. On the other hand, it would be cool with a few quests where you save an artist or osmething who'd then make a painting of you fighting his captors. A few opportunities for unique paintings and books starring you for your house would be great.

Now explain to me, how would that work given the gameplay mechanics, design choices and engine restrictions?

Upload a picture to Photobucket. Now find it, click edit, and select "Effects", then "Cartoon", "Sketch" or "Colour Sketch". The website then automatically re-renders the image with your desired effect. Now, same principle. Your 'painter' companion, or however this system would work, could save a snapshot from their point of view, so it'd just be a screenshot taken by the NPC. The screenshot would then be rendered as a coloured cartoon, and saved as a picture file. Done. It's a little unwieldy a process, but probably possible.

Also a lot of work, for a pretty small result, but eh. Personalisation is personalisation I guess.

Brave, brave Sir Robin, he bravely ran away.

Would you give your bard artistic freedom to write about all your exploits, or just your victories?

He might write about the time you were stalking a high elf O_O! how embarrassing :P I would give him freedom to write, but not necessarily freedom to publish :P ^_-
