Discussion of novel "The Passage"

I finished reading Cronin's vampire apocalypse novel "The Passage" last night, and I have a few issues with it, though it's a page-turner. The novel wants me to believe that humans have souls, for one. Somehow I can suspend disbelief enough to read a novel with a vampire apocalypse in it (science-based), but it seems excessive when the novel becomes increasingly spiritual.

The character Amy is a messianic figure, but the author doesn't explain how she got to be that way; a speaker for the dead, and more, apparently from birth. She ends up with a thousand-year lifespan as well, though it's a long story. The novel reminds me of Stephen King's novel "The Stand", but better. Two sequels are planned, but I'm not looking forward to them as much as initially.

Anyway, comments are welcome since there's no one in RL I can discuss the book with, but only comment if you've read it, please.
