modded game taking longer and longer to load

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:16 am

I've noticed lately that my game seems to take longer and longer to load. Regardless of quickloading or loading up for a new session of play, the time has increased dramatically. I can understand that as I do more DLC's and do more things in the game then its storing more and more data, but it seems like the loading time has jumped to about 45-60 secs now. I just sit there staring at my screen now waiting and waiting and waiting.

From the mods below, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what or which mods might be causing this? Or is this expected and normal for this many mods?

Check the sizes of your save files. See if they are actually getting larger.

Nope doesn't seem to be any file increase. They all seem to stay around the middle 7000KB mark.

Could it have anything to do with CASM? In that I set casm to rotate through 50 saves. And not 20 or so on.

Have you installed any high-res texture replacers lately?

Do you have lots of unused files sitting in your Data folder? Backup esps after using FO3Edit, perhaps?

The bigger the Fallout3 folder and in particular the bigger the Data folder, the more time the game will take to load.

Actually this is mainly caused by MMM.
The problem is the engine doesn't properly delete disabled references, even if they are markedfordelete, and MMM creates more new references than any other mod.

If you make a clean save without MMM the load times would probably decrease for you. Just the question is if you really want to do that.

So making a clean save every once in a while would fix this?

Yeah...
but of course if you do this every existing actor from MMM will also dissapear until a cell reset occurs again. So it's something you can do, but I wouldnt advise to do so unless you think its absolutly necessary.

So basically its just a case of accepting and living with it and not a cause for concern? If thats the case then I guess I won't let it bother me too much.

Thanks for the replies though.

Is there no tool to delete these references?

I know this thread is a few weeks old now, and you've probably solved your problem by now, but figured I'd mention it anyways, since I just spent the last couple of days battling this same problem. After disabling mods one at a time, I found it was the Amy Wong mod causing my ridiculously long loading times. So if you are still having this problem you could try disabling it to see if it helps you as well. Or try updating it to the latest version if you haven't already.

Edit: Forgot to mention that updating fixed the problem for me.

Yea 7000kb seems like a huge save file. Mine are all about 1400kb, and they load after only like 5 seconds. Then again, I have very few mods so my saves could just be very very tiny.

It's not necessarily the size of the savegame which makes it load up so slow. I've got a 7000kb save as well, with 74+ hours invested into it and I'm using MMM and a 14-day cell reset time, and yet my game loads up in about 5 seconds. During my first play-through I had a 10000kb save with 100+ hours of playtime and it too loaded up pretty quickly (and no, I'm not using an SSD).
