Hair Colours

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:26 am

I'm creating a large number of NPC's to use as a source of random looks for my ranger mod, and I've made a lot of faces I'm satisfied with. However, the hair colours have given me a headache. Hispanics, Asians and African American 'races' are easy, just black right? The Caucasian race is a bit trickier though, just trial and error is fine for the PC but takes a long time for larger numbers of NPC's.
Partial solution: Create a pre-made list of colours.

To start things off, here are the in-game presets:
126 126 126 Bleached
057 055 055 Brown
033 031 031 Chocolate
122 114 065 Platinum
133 108 071 Cornsilk
092 073 054 Suede
077 071 051 Pecan
077 047 043 Auburn
102 062 045 Ginger
129 106 065 Honey
106 067 015 Gold
064 031 030 Rosewood
034 035 045 Black
049 044 034 Chestnut
110 110 110 Steel
124 102 082 Champagne

I'll probably settle for using just those colours, but if anyone has other suggestions I'm happy to take them. A forum search in both the Fo3 and Oblivion sections got me 0 results, so one thread on the topic can't hurt. :)

I haven't had to use the numbers specifically to come up with hair colors, but I can see why it would be helpful if you have a lot of them to do. Natural looking hair tones are much harder I've noticed, than vivid unnatural ones. Generally if I like a color hue (RGB mix) of one of the defaults, I usually just half all of its values and it seems to work ok for me. They display very bright, much brighter in game then they do in the geck, so cutting them in half seems to work ok. If it's a wacky color, or a nice shade but way too vivid, I usually drop all the number by about 10, then drop the highest one between 5 to 10 more, and raise what was the lowest one by the same amount. Balance out the seperation between the highest and lowest seems to give more realistic results. Sorry I don't have any kind of super shortcut for these other than just working fast in the geck.

Okay, Tubal, I've done a little searching, and this is what I've come up with.

http://web.njit.edu/~kevin/rgb.txt.html with the RGB/hex codes for a lot of colours. You could possibly use it to find the more natural colours of hair.

However, you're going to be a lot happier with these: http://www.retouchpro.com/pages/skintones.jpg and http://www.retouchpro.com/pages/haircolor.jpg. Probably not as massively diverse as you'd like, but you can tweak them a bit yourself to get darker or brighter hues.

I hope that helped a little, anyways. Definitely not the most comprehensive search I've done. I'll see if I can't find more.

The hair chart is definitely interesting, even though I had to register to see it. The skin chart is less useful since you can't set the skin tone directly, and some of those hues don't look healthy.

After doing a bit of googling myself it seems like most sites refer back to the retouch pro charts again.

Sorry I don't have any kind of super shortcut for these other than just working fast in the geck.

Thanks for the tips either way. :)

That's funny, I didn't have to register to see them when I looked them up.

I only gave the skin tone picture because it was with the hair colour chart. Either way, they seem useful and I've got them saved into my modding archive.

Well, this is a nuclear wasteland, ravaged by radiation, disease and hunger. Lots of people are bound to be sick.
