Different Types of Shields

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:49 am

After reading the info on combat earlier this week it seems like there will be a lot more precision when blocking and other combat maneuvers. So I thought I would bring up a topic I had not seen before. More types of shields. In Oblivion each level of armor had it's own shield, with a few additional shields like Spellbreaker. This is all fine and good but seeing how there will be many different enemies to fight (monsters, warriors, and archers are priority in this post), shouldn't there be more than just one shield for each armor level?

Some shields would work better in certain situations, like a tower shield being useful against archers and dragon fire as it is typically large enough to cover most of your body. Other shields like a buckler or a hoplite shield would be better for a close range skirmish. and what better way to slay the hordes of undead than with a heater shield like paladins of yore? Basically what I propose is they add a few different shields that would have different advantages and disadvantages like they do with swords. They are already way under represented and are getting an overhaul as far as blocking so why not?

I would like Tower shields, and maybe kite shields in addition to the regular shields.

As far as I remember, there were no tower shields in Oblivion, even though there were in Morrowind. I kind of missed them. Not sure if they are likely to act much differently though, in Morrowind I think tower shields were just heavier and had a higher armour rating, which was fine by me.

Problem with tower shields like a Roman Scutum is you hold it behind the boss and when you bring it forward it completely obscures your attacker. Smaller shields like those in OB had the grips set abnomally high to compensate for this and were rigged to the forearm bone. 1st and 3rd person animations would need to specifically support tower shields.

Yes Yes and Yes. TES needs to rip off Demon's Souls in this regard. That game did it perfectly. You wanna carry a tower shield? Fine. Just know you're going to trudge around worse than Trevor Belmont. You wanna carry a heater? Fine. Good luck against the heavy hitters. I love it!

True but ES has their own culture and weapon styles so they could just put the grip somewhere else on tower shields and I'm sure people wouldn't mind lol.

I would love a unique shield with razorsharp edges and with an extra move that allows for a strike with the edge resulting in cutting of a limb or a deep bleeding wound on the enemy!!

They could add spiked shields that deal more damage with a shield bash.
