Defective Oblivion Disc Maybe?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:47 am

A while back I got a PC copy of Oblivion in the Award Winning combo pack with Bioshock. I've seen the Xbox 360 version of Oblivion to know that the Breton males are supposed to have a different voice than the Imperials. However, in my PC version both races use the Imperial's voice actor. Even main characters like Jauffree, the Dark Brotherhood Vampire, etc now use the Imperial male voice. In some places the voice is missing completely. Jauffree goes silent for a few sections of dialogue and the guy in Weye who gives the "Go Fish" quest is a mute now. It's as if the Breton voice actor was completely erased and the Imperial voice actor was put in his place, but they forgot to replace all of the dialogue.

Did this happen because of some legal issue or do I have a defective disk?

PS. This isn't an installation error, as I have reinstalled the game three or four times.

That is odd. Do you have the latest official patch installed, or is the version that was bundled the Game of the Year Edition? Those races share the same texture files, but the voices are different. Maybe you are having a general problem with the game processing sounds. What type of sound setup do you have, a separate card or on-board?

I have the latest official patch installed. I don't know for sure but I believe this is not the Game of the Year Edition. I have on on board sound card, but if it were a sound problem wouldn't I be having other audio issues? Aside from this voice problem, the game's audio has been flawless. Of all the audio in Oblivion, why would one set of voices be all that is affected?

I used Jauffree as one of my examples because A. his name was easiest to spell and B. he has unique dialogue that I wouldn't have expected the Imperial voice actor to have performed. The game acts like everthing is fine except one voice actor has been completely erased and MOST of his dialogue is now covered by another actor. This is why I thought it might be a legal issue at first, such as Bethesda having a lawsuit or something with that voice actor.

I'm now leaning more towards my disc being defective. If this is the case, what should I do? I've had it too long to return it to the store for a refund.

I do not think you need to refund your disc. Have you tried extracting the Oblivion - Sound.bsa?

I checked the bsa files. The Breton male voice seems to be associated with the Oblivion - Voices2.bsa file. The Oblivion - Sounds.bsa file just got rid of sound effects. There was no specific file named Oblivion - Sound.bsa. Extracting the Voices2.bsa file eliminated the Breton voice completely. Is there a way for me to get another Voices2.bsa that would have the correct Breton voice? The Imperial voice actor was ok for the Imperials, but the way he says his lines for Bretons is just plain lousy compared to the other guy.

I forgot about the Voices BSA. :L I think you need to activate archive invalidation after extracting those. Do you have Oblivion Mod Manager installed? If not, install it, following the instructions below, which configures OBMM for archive invalidation.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. RF concerns. I have OBMM and it seems to already be configured. How do I use it for archive invalidation, though?

PS. if it matters, I made a mistake earlier. The breton male voice is in the Voices1.bsa and not Voices2.

All you have to do to "configure" OBMM for archive invalidation is make sure "BSA Redirection" is set (which I think is the default setting) and leave it at that. Ignore any instructions you find in mods about changing your archive invalidation settings. Setting BSA Redirection in OBMM is basically a one-time thing.

So yes, my OBMM was already configured by default. So what do I do from here? I'm sorry for needing to be walked through this, but all I've done with OBMM until now was adjust the .esp load order.

I've still got the problem, so if configuring OBMM was the last step then the problem is something else.

So any other ideas? I've still got Bretons talking with Imperial voices. Apparently my OBMM was configured before I even made this thread, so that's not it.

If you have installed both the official and unofficial official patches, maybe the two voices are just very similar. I am about to test the first stage of my new build, so I can try to test in my own game.
