Messing with Akatosh

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:02 am

Have always been a bit unhappy with replacers for Akatosh so had a go at doing one myself today - what do you think?

I haven't touched the UV maps at all - what a mess they are :( - have only done dds dxt1 (with mipmaps - um 6 i think)

Superb!!!

Maybe it would be necessary to reduce a little the size of the scales?

This, pretty much. The scales are a bit too obvious, and I couldn't really think of a way to remedy it. Fortunately, papill6n thinks enough for both himself and me. :)

You could tone down the effect of the filter by creating two identical layers, applying the filter only to the top one and then setting its transparency to 35-65 percent.

Oh - well that's good feedback - I've never really used mosiac before and had been messing around with layering crocodile skin over over the top - which worked but not as well as i would like

I've gone back and softened the scales slightly here is http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8015/akatosh2.png

I decided on the mosaic tiles because marble wasn't really doing it for me and I have tried to ensure the colour palette is still true to the original feel of Ebonheart - dirty greens, grays and browns - the pole and base have not been changed as i use various texture replacers for those already.

Does it look out of place? I've been looking at it too much today so can't be subjective anymore.

Cool texture. You could also just have the scales run down the sides and limbs too, and then sharpen the underbelly, wing webbing and maybe the plates on the top too, by filtering another texture on them, a stone texure perhaps.
You could remove the scales from areas like the nose too, just some quick suggestions.

Edit: Ah, you posted a while before I did, didn't see the latest picture. It looks great with the new filter.

The colors look fine, you could lighten the texture to make it more like the original, but I think the darker look is pretty cool too, so I'd just choose using your own personal taste.
And sorry if I sound too critical, the texture is great, I like to try and avoid just posting 'looks great keep it up', and give possible improvements if I can.

I hate to say it... but now the plinth looks as if it needs some mesh rework love to match the quality of the statue. Any chance of getting that smoothed out round? Or even reducing the facets down to octagonal/hexagonal might look good. Otherwise it looks fabulous.

it's very very good. scary good in fact. it looks like it should leap off the pedestal and give you what for. however shouldn't a statue in the middle of the port show some weathering? maybe a quick hit with the erosion app to take some of the new new edge off it. either way it is awesome work and i hope you release it soon

Oh - I know what you mean - vanilla looks a bit sad - however the plinth uses about 4 or 5 generic textures used elsewhere and I was worried that if I changed them it would be like pulling on a loose thread and I'd find they would look out of place with everything else - hopefully AOF will add some imperial textures with his next paint bucket release - unless I've missed that already - I had been using some of Connary's textures but never liked how he did Akatosh - the green eyes and horns bothered me

I know what you mean - there are some colours baked into the mesh - grimy greens mainly that give the appearance of mold or moss on the statue - I'll play around with the textures a bit more there are 5 different body parts and textures for the statue I've got some splotchy type effects i can use on them to weather them a bit more

Thanks for the feedback everyone - wasn't sure if it just looked wrong or not and whether it was worthy of a release

Not sure if I'm feeling the mosaic filter. Or at least not in as many places on the texture as it is now. It looks out of place on the spine, and even in the dragon's nostrils. I agree with Dirnae that I think trying to find a high resolution marble or stone texture to overlay, to give the texture a bit more detail, could help.

Oh - in that case it is now pending at PES - has the obelix which he is entwined around redone as well but not the plinth - small pic http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/8093/newakatosh.jpg

I wasn't sure myself hence the thread - however there is your very good marble replacer available for those wanting something less scaly :)

While the texture itself seems fine, it doesn't look quite right to me. It just doesn't look like a statue anymore. I'm having trouble locating exactly what doesn't look right, but I think perhaps that the scales look too noticeable, or not enough like they were carved. Unless it was cast, then I guess it looks fine. Maybe it's not even that, and it just looks too new.

It's not leather until you've tanned it, and I'm sure tanning a live dragon would prove more than difficult. That said, scales grow from skin.

*snip* it just looks too new.

Thanks for the feedback Arsuru - I just want to weigh in with some lore here - Vvardenfell wasn't colonised until 3E 414 - the player turns up in 3E 427 - only 13 years later

I doubt that the Tribunal would have approved of a Statue of Akatosh in Ebonheart prior to that time

I'm also unclear whether the Duke of Morrowind resided in Ebonheart - it has a distinct Imperial design to it and may have been built as the first fort by the Imperials when they arrived - which makes me suspect Imperial textures should look far newer than the grimy look most texture replacers aim for

That said while I too am not 100% happy with the texture I am 100% happy with the concept and for me it is an improvement over the vanilla and some other replacers I have used in the past - it keeps vanilla colouring for those who like to have the original colour palette - though the dark blue/black version I also did was more satisfying to me :)

Besides when Plangkye says she wants something who am i to hold back? :)

if anyone wants it it is up on http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9116

You're absolutely right. I think I was confusing the date of Morrowind's incorporation into the empire with Vvadenfell's colonization. Oops. Looking again at the original statue, it looks to be metal if anything, so this texture certainly seems more appropriate now.

Return to III - Morrowind
