What makes Elder Scrolls a great game

graphics are better...on a 2006 xbox 360 game that for some reason is being compared to a 2002 xbox game for graphics like that means something

he's ignoring the point is what he's saying

But stylistically, the two are comparable. Getting past the point of polycounts and texture resolutions, there's a style behind all the faces that doesn't go away in Oblivion, I would argue. A better example, perhaps, would be http://images.uesp.net//thumb/3/39/OB-npc-Thoronir.jpg/600px-OB-npc-Thoronir.jpg compared to Fargoth, or http://images.uesp.net//1/12/OB-npc-Carwen.jpg compared to http://uesp.net/wiki/File:MW-npc-Galbedir.jpg. To me, disregarding the eye color, they all look like the same race even though the graphics are better in one game.

i agree, but blog reader was using the detail that you get in the characters's appearances in oblivion compared to morrowind as an argument that the overall character generation in morrowind is inferior when a lot of that detail was only possible because 360 far surpasses what xbox could do graphically, add to which, character gen has very little to do (in a lot of people's minds at least) to how your character looks but rather how customizable your character can be and how easy it is to master various skills, which is something that morrowind does much better than oblivion IMO largely because you can boost more skills from the start and it's much much easier to train all of your skills in morrowind, whereas I literally have to create a drain skill spell (which means i have to be a journeyman in destruction before i can even train certain skills that are a pain in the ass to train) that cheats the game so i can master skills that are otherwise nearly impossible unless i want to spend days upon days upon days raiding dungeons with enough enemies to train effectively.

As in-- the fact that there are physically no stairs in Telvanni architecture and the fact that Redguard Taverns have different layouts from Breton taverns as lore.
They had stairs at Tel Branora, both inside and out as I recall. And there were some in Uvurth's Grave. Actually, didn't every Telvanni house in Sadrith Mora have a staircase up to them? I'm pretty sure there's stairs everywhere in Tel Mora.

The arguement was about character customization and people where calling oblivion's completely inferior when it was just as good as morrowind's and that doesn't have much to do graphics because you can have a version like oblivion's but with worse graphics.

1) character customization usually refers to your character's abilities, especially considering most ppl use the first-person view and barely ever actually see their character, and morrowind kicks the absolute [censored] out of oblivion on all fronts in that perspective

2) no you can't, bethesda spent almost every once of space on the disk for gameplay and maps, that's why there are so many loading screens while you run around morrowind because the disk barely has enough space to hold the map (especially if you have the GOTY edition which should have come with 2 disks but that's neither here nor there,) but when you load a disk with as much information as morrowind and a system like xbox that doesn't have nearly the amount of space required for graphics and gameplay that a 360 does, you sacrifice things like taking 50 difference hairstyles into 5 different hairstyles specific to race and gender, you keep the appearance of minute things like hair to a minimum so you can use the limited disk space to make the game worth while, they didn't have physical room or enough give a [censored] to make room for something like hairstyles, and no one is going to bother to load up a disk with something like aesthetics when, quite frankly, you don't see enough of your character for it to really matter, would it be nice if they had it? sure, does it really impact the game or your ability to create a truly great video game character? i sure don't think so

When I first played Oblivion, the first thing that happened to me, was I ran into a Highwayman. Some may not think that that was interesting, but I felt like I was doing more than playing the game. I was living it. I spent the next day clearing out dungeons of vampires, saving peoples farms, hunting deer, and recovering taxes for the poor. I could do whatever I wanted.

Well just saying but if the whole morrowind vs oblivion stuff keeps going on this thread will be shut down.
And both games are great they both have there highs and lows.
Some like one more than another but your probably not gonna change someones opinion.
So for sake of the thread lets call it even? :foodndrink:

Goty morrowind has 1 disk.

i know, i'm saying the amount of data in the morrowind GOTY edition probably should have warranted a second disk like oblivion did

Hey, that's how they were described in the Lovecraft story, well for the most part. That should be something they did good.

I completely understand what you mean. If someone asked me exactly when i fall in love with Oblivion, i would point at my first meet with a Highwayman. It was in the middle of the night and I was crossing the giant bridge over the Upper Niben when the Khajiit approached. I totally got my ass kicked but 1 save game later, i had slain my first highwayman. I never forgot that. I had slain a few bandits and wolves (and i loved it) but it was at this moment i really realized that i might just be about to discover something extraordinary, something truely stunning. I had never played a game like that before. This is one of the reasons i love Oblivion. It opened my eyes for an genre i didn't even think i would like, and now it's my favourite genre. I will never forget Oblivion and Bethesda for that.

Looking back, i can understand why some Morrowind fans consider Oblivion inferior. It is certainly more streamlined and accessible than Morrowind but to me, this was the best thing that could happen. Without it, i would never had understood or appreciated Morrowind and that would've been a terrible shame, because Morrowind too, is one of the best games i've ever played. Yes. It is possible to love both of them. :whistling:

Oh yeah, there are those steppy things and ramps on the outside.

No stairs on the inside, though.

The ability to "live another life in another world." I can take a guy from scratch and build him into anything I want him to be. That's why people love sandbox RPGs and Bethesda happens to be the best company around making those types of games.

  • Open World
  • Lots of quests (guilds included)
  • Good graphics (for its time)
  • Mods
  • Character customization
  • Loot
  • Dynamic Environments
  • Great lore
  • Dialog systems

Also, the lack of ladders. I hate climbing down them. When looking down at them, do I look down and move forward, do I back up? The whole ladder thing is confusing.

I sincerely hope we get something that funny and original in TES:V again. The whole thing with a place being cut off to certain characters, or requiring skills usually associated with other characters, was brilliant.
