Please Bethesda, choise a "normal" protection for Skyrim, give us the possibility of buy Skyrim without steam.

I want a simple Disc Check, or even see Bethesda as bold to go the Witcher 2 route, with no DRM.

serial code registration at best (Cant resell the game anyway) but god don't let it be tied to steam like Fallout NV. If I want Steam running then I will buy it on Steam.

As a non PC user, could someone explain to me why people don't like Steam? Genuinely interested.

I do use Steam, but I don't want it for Skyrim.
I can't have anyone or anything mess with my holy installation folder, when I'm going to mod the hell out of this game. :stare:

Dunno what is the big deal with Steam. Every PC player should own at least Half-life 2, so they should already have Steam installed imo. =P

To me Steam itself is not the problem. The problem is if they use Steamworks like with NV.

Steamworks means that all versions(retail or digital) of the game MUST be registered to Steam.

I use Steam for many games, but some games I prefer to not have on Steam. With Steamworks that choice is gone.

Steam is good for some things, like multiplayer games, but for singleplayer games it wastes unnecessary processing power for the average computer. The biggest problem is that if it is a steamworks game, it requires you have internet to register it, which some people still don't have, not to mention that there are plenty of games now that aren't completely on the disc and when you register online, it makes you download the rest of the game to install it. The main reason for steam is so that you can't pirate it with CD cracks because it requires you to launch the game through steam. I for one don't want to buy Skyrim and then when I drive the 45 min home, I don't want to have to wait another hour or two downloading the rest of the game. I enjoy steam for multiplayer games but otherwise, no.

Oh and it makes it a pain in the ass to try to mod the game on steam also. *Remembers modding Torchlight and cries*

BUT if you have steam you have to go from point A pass through point C press point D then reload point Z then check for point R then go back to point C and all this happens while slowing your net speed down and costing you all those nice limited GB you have (yes I have limited net cap) THEN finally you get to point B.

I'd be surprised if it were anything but a simple disc check just like Morrowind and Oblivion were.

The main reason for steam is to eliminate the second hand market, otherwise I agree with you.

I don't mind steam even though I don't buy all my games from steam. Sometimes they have really good offers for slightly older games and I buy lots of those. It doesn't really cause any performance issue, so I have no idea why some people hate it, I generally tend to assume they are paranoid about having steam + some illegal/copied software on their pc (wich, lets not kid outrselves, everyone has in one form or another).

I have yet to see a crack for a game on steam, so I'm not sure what you guys are meaning by that. But your right, I should've said that it was one of the main reasons, the main reason is to eliminate the second hand market.

I have yet to see a steam game that isn't cracked. But enough about this, lets not derail this thread and get it locked.

While not a problem for me now, I used to have dial up, and I bought the orange box. Not all the files necessary were on the orange box, so it installs part of HL2 and then steam. Then it downloads HL2. Can you imagine how long that takes on dial up? Now imagine if your dial up had a hardcoded 4 hour disconnect limit on it(And a 200 hour monthly limit). It literally took at least a month to install it. And then the updates came next.

Anything but Ubisoft style (online all the time), or SecuROM like (basically malware).

If it's Steamworks, I don't care, because it's better than one of those. Besides, Steam is nice and uses very little resources.

Indeed. I'm willing to bet that since introducing these new DRM schemes companies have not been better off in terms of piracy reduction. Quite the contrary I believe.

Steamworks games get cracked just like any other game. I'd like to go into more detail, but piracy is a touchy subject on these forums. Anyway, the only thing I'm asking for in regard to DRM is no online activation for retail copies. That's it.

^Yes, that's my biggest issue with Steam, followed by the fact that internet connectivity should not be required for a single-player game. I expect that Bethesda will not make an announcement about DRM for at least several months. Whatever the case, a disk check and maybe offline keycode would be the only acceptable DRM for the retail disk version, in my opinion.

It depends on how they liked thier experience with steam and fonv. I expect they will be using steam again.

An upgraded version of the Ubisoft masterpiece where you'd have to stay online even when not playing the game.

All seriousness aside, a simple disccheck would suffice. Online activations and stuff just don't do anything but extra annoyances to paying customers. Optimal situation would, of course, be a completely DRM free product (like The Witcher 2), but I doubt that will ever be the case.
