Behold! The Nega-Laser

This does seem promising and it could have potentially useful applications if their theories hold true. Still want to see a Beam Emitting Device that uses positive energy to help stimulate human cells to regenerate quicker.

lightsaber?
Nein.

... well... actually... maybe?

I imagine a strong laser at the handle, then a properly calibrated nega-laser at the "top" - I'm no optical engineer, but I would guess that it could be possible to "cancel" the two beams.

That would fix the problem of making the laser go on forever-- it would NOT fix the problem of the intense heat radiating outward.

...OR WOULD IT?

Holy [censored]. If a powerful laser's constant emission of light can generate heat energy, then... could a reverse laser's constant absorption of light lower heat energy? Guys, this is actually pretty friggin' sweet.

And could one of these reverse lasers maybe temporarily blind someone? Hrm....

Everyone knows that lightsabers are plasma-based. I don't understand where the crazy idea of them being lasers came from. It doesn't even make sense. Lasers pass right through each other, but plasma blades encapsulated in an electromagnetic field would actually hit each other.

I think the problem is that lightsabers are shiny. And they are never shown lighting things on fire (well, I suppose wound cauterization is kinda like lighting someone on fire...)

Plasma can be pretty dang bright, they also show lightsabers melt through metal doors. The plasma is so hot it vaporizes and sears rather than lighting things on fire (on a similar note: low-powered lasers can also light things on fire. Power is what determines whether something is vaporized or lit on fire in both cases)

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightsaber and http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber both agree with me.

If the title is a reference to what I think it is, then well done sir. If not, go fart yourself. ;)

Came from episode 1 when Anakin called Quigon's lightsaber a laser-sword.

I figure, in the grand scheme of things, that laser-based lightsabers will be more immediately practical than plasma based ones - unless there's an easy way to magnetically control the plasma in a handheld device. And, you know, figuring out a way so people don't decapitate themselves. :P

Which is why only Jedi and select others can wield them. Lightsabers as lasers just don't work. I mean, it is at least somewhat feasible for a magnetic field holding plasma in place, but even with this, it still isn't really possible to limit a laser's reach. Also lasers wouldn't bounce off each other, so no defensive capability. Finally lasers need prolonged exposure to cut through things, whereas plasma is like a REALLY hot knife through butter.

In either case, particle beams are far cooler weapons and what our efforts should be focused on. Lasers are soooo last decade.

I see what you did there. :P

I don't know what you are talking about :whistling:

I knew someone would go there, somebody always does. It's just like how Oblivion will inevitably be brought up in bad/disappointing/overrated games threads*. Or Avatar in any bad/disappointing/overrated movies thread.

*Excluding threads that don't include games released in 2006.

cool... iguess. still don't know why we need an "anti laser" when you can just turn your laser off (or use a mirror if some one is shining a laser at you)
