I figure, in the grand scheme of things, that laser-based lightsabers will be more immediately practical than plasma based ones - unless there's an easy way to magnetically control the plasma in a handheld device. And, you know, figuring out a way so people don't decapitate themselves.

Which is why only Jedi and select others can wield them. Lightsabers as lasers just don't work. I mean, it is at least somewhat feasible for a magnetic field holding plasma in place, but even with this, it still isn't really possible to limit a laser's reach. Also lasers wouldn't bounce off each other, so no defensive capability. Finally lasers need prolonged exposure to cut through things, whereas plasma is like a REALLY hot knife through butter.
In either case, particle beams are far cooler weapons and what our efforts should be focused on. Lasers are soooo last decade.
