Concern for Autoaim?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:36 am

I've browsed a couple of gameplay vids from PAX, and I've noticed distinct twitches in the standard aim reticle such as in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDz8bC3Ljk8&lc=epoklj0cANxVFWJti0oR2Yq_ddkLXyh0pfbTeb_bHyA&feature=inbox. Can anyone who's played this game at PAX offer testimony of how strong they felt the auto aim to be? Was it very noticible, did you know it existed, did it "feel just right"? Just looking for feedback here on that mechanism.

FYI, I understand that auto aim is apart of every online game mode in virtually every console FPS. I'm just curious to know how accentuated it is in Brink.

By the way, I added a nice little poll. Just curious about the masses at the forum.

Preordered and can't wait. I can't really contribute to the auto aim discussion, but my hopes are it will be very minor if not none at all.

I can't answer your question, but luckily you answered mine about the poll thing. If you didn't I would have asked what it had to with the topic at hand, also I would think in my head WTFBBQ.

I want to pre-order but haven't done so yet. As for the Auto-aim, I think it's pretty minor. It's not exactly going to be a game-wrecker.

i remember hearing that there IS auto aim but it's very light (just follows the target for a ft or 2) it was on a topic here somewhere, was awhile ago though so i can't tell you exactly which one it is, sorry.

I'm still saving up to pre-order. As for the other question, I wish I'd played the game already. Looks and sounds like they've kept it on the lesser end of the scale though.

I have a question about the poll. If I wanted to wait for the reviews, which are released after the game, then how do I preorder Brink when it's already out?

You can't, pre-orders are only before the game comes out. But many times I've gone to gamestop and picked up a game on release day I've gotten the pre-order bonus. If only the bonus isn't already in the game case.

You can't, and that's the idea. Assuming you have an interest in purchasing Brink, you've either (presently) pre-ordered the game (or have intention to do so) or are waiting until after to buy the game, at which point reviews will be rolling out the whazoo.

Why does the poll have literally NOTHING to do with the topic!?

As for the ACTUAL topic: When I played the very early version in 2010 the auto-aim was bugged and would sometimes not work at all, but other times like an aimbot.
Another user on this forum played the game on PAX East this year and described the auto-aim as "snap-to-head"-assist.

So I guess it will be quite insistent. However, in the old version that I played, you could adjust the level of auto-aim with a slider.

Aubrey touching on aim-assist for console controls: “CoD, and most console FPS games actually do have a short amount of aim acceleration to them:
The first couple of frames are "catching up" to your input speed, so that "flicks" or "taps" in direction result in small angular steps, and not in full speed jumps, which tend to just lurch your aim over things you're trying to finely aim at. In short, it's pretty frustrating to have no acceleration what so ever, but we keep ours to a minimum, like CoD.
We don't, however, do CoD's single-player only style of aim assist (momentarily snapping to a target on the "positive edge" of an ironsight button press).”

Sounds fine to me, autoaim is really just a fact of life for console gamers. So long as it's kept to an imperceptible level it doesn't bother me at all

CoD autoaim is brutal, it literally tracks the target for a few feet and often times messes up the hitbox making it larger I feel. If it has CoD type auto aim then there is no way it can be a hardcoe shooter I feel.

edit: I watched the video, it appears it almost snaps right to their head, maybe the dude was just that good but I doubt it as he looked like he could have easily killed more people had he been more aware.

It doesn't really want to be a hardcoe shooter, it wants to create a fast-paced and inviting environment for every player

that to me is disappointing, and if BRINK has COD style auto aim I will not be getting it (sigh), catering to the masses does not usually equal good games that are fun and challenging to come back to. The replayability of a game for most hardcoe gamers lies solely in the fact that it is hard to master and a challenging experience=more fun; noobs come and go--making a game that is challenging will keep dedicated players coming back for more. Kz3 failed for the exact same premises as opposed to Kz2.

I think i gave you the wrong idea haha. its not trying to cater to the masses, it actually has very unique team-oriented and objective-based gameplay, which I'm sure will scare off most gamers. It's just that it is trying to take out a lot of the frustrating aspects present in most of today's games (ie OHKs, noob tubes, camping, etc).

also I can't be sure about the aim-assist but I don't think its going to end up very similar to CoD's - They've been trying to distance themselves from that franchise as much as possible

yeah i know what you mean, just him referring to CoD really has me spooked now. I am planning on getting this game because it looks as though it has a damage system very similar to MAG, i.e. about 5-8 bullets to kill, multiple head shots etc. I just don't want auto aim, it makes the game so much easier for people and I really just want this to be a challenging, competitive game. I am all for ease of play and intuitinveness much like what the smart button offers, however I don't want the gun play to get watered down and made easy for everyone because then the game would lack some skill. I really am faithful that BRINK will make it right, but just a little spooked by his comment lol.

yeah same here, I almost think he was just using it to compare it to a really popular game though. Hopefully the auto-aim is, as i said, barely noticeable or completely imperceptible
