Lore about a fanfic

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:40 pm

Hi guys! Need some advice.

Usually when I play an RPG I tend to imaging some events or scenes happening in a diferent way than what actually hapens in the game.

For example, I used my imagination a lot while playing Baldur?s Gate (the entire saga). Maybe because I absolutely love the story... I used to imagine (and I still do) how the encounters with Joneleth and Bodhi would play out, diferent and more extensive dialog. To the point that I still develop in my mind what could have happened to the lives of the ex-Bhaalspwans and their companions after the events of series: Khelben?s death, drizzt?s flight to Kara-tur to protect his daughter, Jaheira?s coma after being possesed by Anomen?s ghost, Imoen married with Khelben, The war of the eight. And a bunch of other stuff i?ve imagined about their lives.

While playing TES III I used to picture Dagoth?s rise to power in a diferent way (just for the fun of it), taking Vvardenfell by assault: the orcs of Gnisis making a last stand against the hordes of 6th house creatures to buy time for the refugees to scape, the siege of Vivec city and the ashlanders coming to the rescue at the 11th hour on kagouti mounts, the nerevarine rallying the blades to help him infiltrate inside Red mountain to sabotage dagoth ur?s assault. Stuff like that.

Oh! I once pictured a little scene in the trial of vivec where the nerevarine shows up and watches the trial from a distance and Azura turns to him/her when she sees muatra and he/she turns his/her back on Azura like saying "Frak it, im tired of this circus... I leave for Akavir to find my own path away from all this madness"

I?m very aware that it all goes against official lore, but the thought of writing a fanfic about it has crossed my mind, and I was wondering if the fans would hate it becuase it has little to do with what really happened and/or goes completely opposite to it.

I?d really appreciate it, If you guys could give me some advice on the matter.

I have to apologize for the poor grammar... English is not my natural language

I don' t know about most fans, and in truth, I don't even know about myself (since I don't read much fanfic these days), but I don't think there'd be anything wrong with alternate histories, or stories that seek to expand the official history beyond the limits of the game engine. Actually, from what I see in your post (particularly that eleventh-hour arrival by khagouti riding ashlanders... very graphic, strikes my mind very easily), I might even read it. It'd be a first, for me.

Just so long as you avoid narmy bathos, imports from other settings (like calling Dunmer "Drow", World of Darkness style Vampires, Dwarves, Hobbits, etc.), Mary Sueish self-insertion characters (as fun as they can be to write, they're not much fun to read, usually), or attempts to rewrite it to go the way you think it SHOULD go (as opposed to how it WOULD go, given certain plausible conditions), it should be fine. But really, you can write whatever you want, and no matter what you do, some people are going to hate it anyway. So it's entirely your call.

Absolutely, I?m pretty sure I won?t do anything like that, since I?d be very upset someone did something like that (i mean importing stuff from other settings).

I only made the comment about the Baldur?s Gate events to illustrate my point...

For a long time i?ve been a fan of Forgotten Realms, Warcraft and TES lore; so I?m aware of the diferences.

Yeah yeah, I know Warcraft lore svcks bigbigbig time compared to TES. And the retcons are completely over the top and rudimentary. But it does help to add more depth to the gaming experience... specially in my case when i picture other events as I said before

There is a Fan-Fiction Forum here where you can post stories. Some members may not like the story, but that's natural. No one will actually hate you for it. It's your writing after all.

Lore is mutable for the sake of a good story. Readers will either won't care about lore, or will mention their idea of where you have broken it without actually knowing any lore in the first place.

I too was impressed by this, especially the bit about the khagouti riders. But then, I've always pictured Nerevar arriving at the Battle of Red Mountain in a chariot pulled by nix-hounds, so maybe I'm just a svcker for that kinda thing.

If they are well-made, I really like stories like that. And if you want an excuse to contradict lore, you could just write a preface that says that the text is written by a Dunmer author who... don't know, had a different view on what actually happened. That could even be a funny element of the story, if you were so inclined.
