Hi:

I'm having a small problem. About every so often (maybe once an hour or two) my game CTDs and I get a message referencing a Microsft C++ Runtime Error. I know I had to install Microsoft C++ for one of my mods but for the life of me, I cannot remember which one. I've tried tracking down the problem myself, but without success. My first thought is that any mod that would cause this crash would have an .ini file of some sort. Here is short list of all the mods that have .ini or other scripting/programming files in my install:

Supreme Magika
Realistic Fatigue
DS Less Predictable Respawn
Real Sleep Extended
OBSE
Streamline (streamsmoothing disabled per Sky Captain's instructions)
Elys Pluggy
Elys Uncapper

Also, I've posed my current mod list above in the spoiler section. FYI: I've cleaned my mods using TES4edit and I've sorted them using the latest version of BOSS. I have NOT started to merge them yet, as I'm trying to make my install as stable as possible before I start.

Try updating the C++ runtime library: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en. I suffered that error to and could not determine the cause; however, I think updating this fixed the problem for some people.

I'm going to reopen this thread. Been away for a couple of weeks, preparing for finals, but came back this weekend to take a break from the books. I'm still running into the C++ Runtime Error. Here's what I've done so far:

1. Downloaded the latest C++ Runtime Library and install per the link Tomlong posted.

2. Scoured through Tomlong's site for suggestions; found the Nvidia drivers link and dowloaded the latest drivers on the outside chance that there's some incompatibility with the C++ install. I don't know, it's a long shot.

3. Several weeks ago I installed the Oblivon 4gb patch and made the changes suggested by Artmoor in the Oblivion Stutter Remover .ini. I thought this would cut down my crashes, but I can't see that it has any effect. Maybe because I'm using a Windows 32 bit (XP) system? Yes, I have 4 gig ram.

Basically, I'm getting a crash about 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes 1.5 hours. These crashes occassionally have an error message that reads C++ Runtime Error.

My load order is as perfect as possible, taking advantage of BOSS, Wrye Bash, merging all "green" mods into the bashed patch. Mods have been cleaned with TES4Edit. The only thing I haven't done that I talked about doing is merging my mods - I just haven't had the time. As result, I'm currently running 230 esps in my Wrye Bash install, with forty merged into the patch (Wrye Bash reads Mods: 190/230).

The game runs fast and well. I'm pulling down 12-21 FPS exterior cells, even with Better Cities installed.

My machine stats are: Windows XP (via BootCamp and MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard).
4 gig ram
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card, 512 mb memory.

If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Do not use that patch on 32-bit Windows XP. You are running a heavy load, but I do not think that that has anything to do with this error. Make sure you upgrade to the latest stable version of OBSE, version 18. Does the error appear when you run in safe mode or on a clean boot?

I was also getting this error. i never really tried to find the reason. It has been Gone since i did these things to my install.

1) removed Oblivion XP (I had Crash with Sound)
2) Updated Pluggy.
3) Updated Bash
4)added Fastexit2

No other changes , Never did anything to do with C-Runtimes. Been over a month since I saw that error. I was getting it at least once a day.

Good know about the patch. I restored my original Oblivion .exe file, as well as the OSR .ini that I modified. That should return me to where I was before the patch.

Glad to hear about OBSE 18 stable. I've been using 18 Beta 6.

I'll have to test the safe mode. Rebooting - clean, full boot - definately improves performance. So does doing a full save every ten minutes or so. I've got the habit of saving regulary and that helps.

This week I'm finally going to try and merge all those armor/weapon mods we talked about some time ago. That should eliminate about 40 esps from my DATA directory.

One other question, somewhat unrelated: what do people set their object/person fade at? (Menu->Video->Object Fade). My tree fade is set for 90. Obviously if you set Object Fade lower, performance increases. At one point I had it down to 30 something (I think that was an auto adjustment) but I couldn't see people even a block away in the IC. I raised it to 60, which helped immensely, but it did decrease performance. Curious what others are doing. (Also, I'm running Streamline, but I don't think it effects object fade).

Simply put, you're pushing that rig too hard. The harsh reality is laptops are not suited for gaming. Your situation is compounded by this being a Mac with XP running under BootCamp. You also haven't specifiec CPU, which is actually much more important to Oblivion than your graphics card.

You're going to have to scale back on the number of mods you're using, or be resolved to deal with the number of crashes you're experiencing. I know this is something a lot of people don't want to hear, but there's no way around it when your hardware isn't up to the task you're asking of it.

Just an FYI, these are my system processor stats from my MacBook, from the Windows XP system menu:

Intel Corel 2 Duo CPU
T8300 @ 2.40 GHz

Otherwise, fair enough. :) I've been suspecting this for a long time. My question is: what mods do I remove?

Of course, it's a personal preference. But what mods are most likely to cause crashes? Is there anything I can do to streamline the install so that the mods don't "weigh so heavily" on my processor?

I can guess what you're going to say...get rid of Better Cities, FCOM, Animated Window Lighting System...all the mods that are the only reason I'm still playing Oblivion. :)

Oddly enough, I get better performance out of my little MacBook Pro than I do with my big Windows desktop with a ATI Radeon 512 graphics card, 3 gig of Ram, and a 2.8 Pentium D processor. I just get the crashes on my MacBook.

I do appeciate all of your help. It's just sad when you finally find the game you love and you find out you can't play it. :(

AWLS is minimal impact, it's not really an issue. While FCOM certainly isn't helping I realize plenty of people won't be willing to give it up. BC would only be an issue when you're in or near the cities.

Your load order lists body mods. Combined with the increased number of NPCs, that's probably putting a huge strain on things. Body mods tend to be higher resolution than vanilla and that's going to tax your video card.

Salmo the Baker is known to have some trouble with its AI, I don't know if that's ever been fixed, but that's one place to look since it did have a confirmed crash issue before.

Cutting back or eliminating all of the "more wilderness life" type of plugins would help too as there would be less spawning around you to cause trouble.

Yes you can keep the Mods you have ..BUT remember you said "I wont Install any more!"

Try adding in a Spawn reducer for FCOM also. Just one notch down will help things alot.

I just want to do a follow-up post:

Back on April 25, I did three things:

(1) I uninstalled the 4gb patch.

(2) I updated my GeForce (Nvidia) drivers.

(3) I installed the OBSE 18 stable version.

I did NOT uninstall any mods or mod resources. I have exactly the same install that I had before (well, actually I added two more mods - sorry, I just can't help myself - but removed one because it was buggy).

Since that time I have not had a single CTD OF ANY KIND. Not one. Prior to this, I was getting CTDs about evern 30 to 45 minutes. Last night, I played for over three hours without a problem. I may have logged off once, but I can't remember. Today, I played for three and a half hours straight without exiting the game or rebooting my Mac. I do full saves regularly, but I pushed it a bit today, saving only every half hour (not something I would do normally).

My FPS still hovers in the low 20s when I'm outside and occassionally drops to single digits in the busier parts of Better Cities.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone who offered their help and advice. Hopefully, I'll be fine from here on. :)
