Arena and Daggerfall for xbox arcade?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:16 pm

Before Bethesda gets caught up in a huge new game, it would be nice to see them bring Arena and Daggerfall to the xbox live arcade. coming from someone who played Morrowind, I felt that Oblivion was way too dumbed down for casual gamers, and I would absolutely LOVE to give the first two a spin. I mean, Doom and Wolfenstien have been released on the arcade, and in a few short months the original perfect dark game will be coming out. What's to stop these two?

They are excessively buggy. I mean excessively. And they're not supported. So they are hardly going to bring it to another console, and then fix all the glitches.

on top of that, they run in DOS. I would like to see a console remake that fixes the bugs, and makes new HiDef graphics like Doom and Wolfeinstein, but it is unlikely.

Along with all that, it's still said that they lost the Daggerfall source code. Also, what's stopping you from giving them a spin on your PC? It's not like you need a real expensive one. Both games are free now.

And in addition, as far as I can tell the Arcade on X360 is for small games, not the imperially majestic splendour of Daggerfall!

Just my tuppence worth...

While it's true that the 'arcade' is for smaller games
the XBox Live MARKETPLACE has many large titles for purchase, some original xbox games. now there are plans for even more digital distro. ....so the SIZE of daggerfall really isn't a hurdle.
It still remains the whole buggy/lost-source-code/would-have-to-port-from-dos Can 'o worms ;)

Would be rad if they did it, but it would be a lot of work. I'd buy it to play in high def.

Nothing getting in the way....

Aside from the fact that they're both probably notoriously difficult to port to something like the Xbox 360 and that they have far too many bugs and issues to ever make it through Microsoft's XBLA QA.

Along with all that, it's still said that they lost the Daggerfall source code.

It is, and I wish people would stop saying it. It's an unfounded rumor with absolutely no apparent basis in reality.

Whoever deleted my post could've at least taken the time to edit out the off-topic content, as the rest of it was a perfectly reasonable reply.

While it is a rumor, I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. No one has ever said that they do have the source code, and losing it during a hard drive crash while moving between offices seems like a pretty feasible scenario.

Since they don't have the source anymore they would have to rewrite it. If they still had the source code, I don't think it would be too much for them to re-release it. However, I doubt it would happen unless they believed they could make a sufficient amount of money to cover the engine rewrite.

It still seems odd to me to release games and not release code. I do understand why they can't in cases of newer engines that use a massive amount of licensed code, but it would be cool with old engines. DOOM sold so many more copies because it's been ported to everything. John Carmack brought that up at Quakecon. He was pleased to be able to do iPhone ports of Wolf3D and Doom basically by himself very quickly because the code had been updated and well maintained by various people.
