Bethesda, I implore you to add another method of transportat

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:47 pm

Let me preface this by acknowledging the idea of Fast Travel isn't necessarily "bad", and it has it's uses. But it's not for everyone.

Fast Travel lets you zip around the entire world in an instant. I don't see how this is very immersive. Bethesda makes RPG's, role-playing games. Games that let you immerse yourself into their world due to it's realism. I don't see how Fast Travel is very realistic, at all.
"Hey Jim, what's up?"
"Oh, just running down to Whiterun for some alchemy flask."
"Oh, cool, see ya later!"
*disappears*

..what? No. That's not very realistic at all.
Bethesda, please add another option for players who actually want to, you know, role play? Players who buy TES because it's not Fable? Players who want to immerse themselves in your world, and not have that realism broken by simply "disappearing" somewhere?

There seems to be this philosophy of "If you don't like it, don't use it." going around here lately. Well, that's fine and all, except that denotes that there is a choice in the matter. There is no "choice" in simply not using fast travel if there is no other viable option or means of traversing landscape other than walking. Horses don't count either, because that's also overly time consuming, and not everyone rides horses, nor can everyone afford horses. Realistically speaking, of coarse.

Public. Transportation.
Sylt Striders, Carriages, etc, PLEASE put something like this in the game. Something that lets me travel city to city for a set amount of gold, like in Morrowind.

You're right, I don't like Fast Travel. So I wont use it. BUT GIVE ME ANOTHER OPTION.

Gameplay/Accessibility > Immersion/Realism.

Gameplay/Accessibility should always come before Immersion/Realism, unless it's specifically made for Hard Core players. Otherwise, it should be made for everyone.

I don't see how that has anything to do with my argument, at all. Simply add in a variant, and keep Fast Travel in the game. I wont use it, but I'll use the variant.
Problem solved.

"They have taken you from the Imperial City's Prison, first by carriage and now by boat. To the East, to Morrowind. Fear not, for I am watchful. You have been chosen."

Just to let you know, Morrowind had boats and Silt Striders, and, combined with Mark + Recall and Divine + Almsivi Intervention, it was damn near impossible to not go almost everywhere you wanted to go extremely quickly.

I wholeheartedly agree. Even if they keep fast travel, add other options too (carriages/caravans), and/or add costs/penalties to any form of "fast travel".

Why would they need to?

They already have a Fast Travel. They can let the modders add another option.

Except you don't just "disappear", time does pass when you use fast travel. It just doesn't show you what happened, exactly like what happened with Morrowind's silt striders.

I agree that alternate methods of transportation would be awesome, but fast travel wasn't teleportation, it was just "cutting out" the stuff between point A and B.

There is already a fast travel thread - let's not keep making new ones.
