Guilds

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:25 pm

I'm wondering what guilds will be in Skyrim and what state they will be in during the game's time frame. In particular what type of Assassins Guild will there be. Is the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim?

The Dark Brotherhood holds a monopoly of assassinations everywhere, but Morrowind.

As for everywhere else, I'd say FG and TG are there. Mages Guild has been dissolved, and two imperially sanctioned groups were made. There are likely to be local organizations too.

It'd be interesting if there were little assassin skirmishes on the eastern side of Skyrim between the Dark Brotherhood and the Morag Tong.

It would be cool if you had some "race" guilds

Well, the game almost certainly takes place after the Infernal City novel, so that gives us a few hints. For starters, the Fighter's Guild and Mage's Guild are gone; when the Empire fell, they fell too. It's mentioned that the Mage's Guild was replaced by the Synod and the College of Whispers, but these might be purely Cyrodiilic institutions, and not present in the other, now-independent, nations.

So we really have no clue what the guilds might look like. There will almost certainly be guilds for warriors, mages, and thieves, but my guess is that they'll all be new guilds with a strong Skyrim flavor to them.

I would like to see new guild that vary in different skills or group of skills. I would also like to see the Dark Brotherhood, a new fighter's guild, The College of Whispers and Synod (although you can only join one?). There should also be race guilds and gender guilds. Also if you join one guild, it could also stop you form join another as they are rivals and each guild should have pros and cons of joining them.

The dissolution of the Empire would give the dev's free range to create entirely new guilds. I'd like them to have better names than just 'the (insert explanation of guild work here Guild'. The Synod and College of Whispers both sound significantly better than The Mages Guild.

Oh, good grief. Here's to more ludicrous whispers from cowls worn in bright daylight, and giggling madly over a blood-and-bones interior.

I hope that the Assassins' Guild has a more Nordic political feel, as opposed to the death cult of Oblivion. I think different clans or houses that you can ally with would be cool.

Infernal City novel? what that ?

An Elder Scrolls novel that came out awhile ago (and which I believe we've been told is canon) that takes place 50 years after Oblivion. There's supposed to be a second book coming out at some point that'll wrap up the story. Beyond the main plot, it also has a bunch of tidbits as to what happened to the world since the end of Oblivion (in short, the Empire fell, with basically everybody declaring independence, and Morrowind was all but destroyed when Vivec's magic finally ran out, and the Ministry of Truth crashed into Vvardenfell, causing the Dunmer to migrate to Solstheim).

I would like to see more guilds and factions one could join. There were so many more options in Morrowind (for example, one could join the Imperial Guard and become the Knight of the Imperial Dragon (Epic!!!)) that Oblivion felt empty and incomplete without them. I hope Skyrim has more selection and content similar to Morrowind.

They would not be welcome in Skyrim.

What happened to the FG? I don't remember anything in the infernal city about them.

It will be really interesting. With the empire falling they have a lot of creative freedom to recreate how organizations work.

If the mages guild has dissolved and the remnants have effectivly split into the College of Whispers and Synod it will be interesting to see if these organisations are in opposition to one another or whether they merely specialise in different schools of magic. I've never the infernal city so does it give any hints?

I'm not sure if it's a magical organisation but it seems like the College of Winterhold with their Ysmir Collective would be the ideal local magical guild which could be set in opposition to the College of Whispers and the Synod.

I hope the game forces true choice in relation to guilds, like in Morrowind where the player was compelled to choose a guild, forsaking some other guilds. Also, progression should be based at least to some extent on skill.

Unlike in oblivion where a Combat character could be Arch Mage by hacking and slashing his way to the top. And you could simultaneously be head of every guild.

I'll be interested to see how they improve the guild system.
