Steam mod compatibility?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:39 pm

I originally played Oblivion from my CDs, but I recently decided to purchase it on Steam for the convenience of being able to download it and not having to hunt down and use the CDs every time I wanted to play it. Now when using mods on the CD installed Oblivion, I for the most part never had any issues, but on the Steam version for some reason I am not able to use some mods. From what I can tell, my Steam version cannot replace textures and meshes (on my character at least) while the CD installed version has no problem with it.

Now, my question here is, does anyone else here use the Steam version of Oblivion? If so are you able to swap out textures and meshes? Whenever I drop the files I want to use (character texture and mesh swaps) into my data folder and run the game, it still just loads the "ugly" default ones. Does anybody know why it would be doing this?

And yes, I did ask this question on the Steam Oblivion forums and the TESNexus forums, and as of yet no answer on this problem. Thanks in advance!

Steam version is fully compatible, but has some oddities that need to be overcome.

Your initial problem with the textures and meshes is probably because of the dates on the BSA files that come with the Steam version. The game uses the most recent dated files, either in the BSA or loose in the DATA directory, in the game. The disc installed BSAs have dates from 2006, but the Steam installed BSAs have much more recent dates.

Google a program called File Date Changer, or something similar, and change the dates of the BSAs to 2006, and you should be fine. You can also try the option to "reset BSA timestamps" in OBMM if you are using that program.

That did it! Yeah, all I had to do was reset the timestamps on the BSAs in OBMM. Thank you so much!
