Any good Non-Point and Click CRPGs?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:51 am

So lately I've been looking for a good RPG that isn't point-n-click, y'know with real-time combat that you actually do yourself, and move around with WASD.

I've just played the Arx Fatalis demo on Steam, and I loved it, so I'm going to be buying that soon (probably this friday), and I've obviously played Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion already. I just want something new for now I guess before Skyrim to hold me over until then.

So I guess I'm just looking for a non-point and click cRPG with a fantasy setting. Any suggestions?

[edit] Also, I don't mind if their older games either. Games from any era will do.

Isn't that game point and click? What I mean is don't you have to click on a little icon to do attacks? That's what I don't want, and it seems to be way to common among RPGs.

Thanks for the suggestion though! I'm DL'ing the Dragon Age II demo right now.

Well, DA 2 isn't out yet. I think DA is an awesome game. You do click on icons to attack, kind of like MMOs. If you love TES-type games and are open for non-fantasy settings, have you tried Fallout 3 and NV? You also have Divinit 2: Ego Draconis, which is an ok CRPG.

They just put up the demo for DA 2 on Steam today, and they don't have one for DA:O.

Yeah I've played both FO3, and FONV. Both great games. I'll check out Divinit 2.

There's Fable, which is fantasy and live-action. People tend to be pretty love/hate with it so I can't directly recommend the series (especially having only played the first), but worth looking into if you're not familiar. If the fantasy setting isn't a must, you might also try Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

Yeah I tried Fable 2, didn't like it at all.

Your like the 50 millionth person to recommend Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (after reading other forums and such), so I guess it must be pretty good, and maybe I'll like another setting for a change. I'll check it out. Thanks!

I've never played V:TM myself, but I can further recommend it as an excellent game. I have several friends who have it, and they swear up and down it's one of the best games they've ever played, despite the fact it's getting older now.

Then let me be the 50.000.001 person to recommend it. It's not a fantasy setting but it does sound like it has the gameplay you're looking for. And imo it's equal to or better than all the other games mentioned in the thread thus far (after you've patched it at least).

Gothic 1 and 2?

Yeah, I think I'm going to buy the universe edition on Steam for $22. It has Gothic 1, Gothic 2: Gold Edition, and Gothic 3. I played the demo of 4, but from what I've read about the games it seems like the earlier ones are more of what I'm looking for.

Yeah once I have some extra cash I'm probably going to just buy it.

Risen

I'm probably going to download the demo in the next few days.

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga hasn't been mentioned yet :P

There's one I haven't heard of. Looking at the screenshots looks pretty over the top haha, I guess I'm more into Bethesdas style of fantasy. The dragons look pretty awesome though. And I looked up a gameplay video, looks like it could be pretty fun. Though without a demo I probably won't be buying it soon.

I agree with the Gothic series (1 and 2 are best, I also liked 3 but got a bit weary to play with lag - though my computer exceeds the requirements - and the occasional bug. Haven't tried 4). I also tried the Risen demo and thought it was good.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
It's great. Get the unofficial patch to fix most bugs though. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Demon Stone - I wish NWN's movement and combat was more like this (i.e. directional movement with an anolog stick/WASD, active combat).
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (disclaimer: I haven't played it yet)
Gothic series (bug-ridden as they are... and clunky controls... but still enjoyable if you are a glutton for punishment or don't mind using god mode. :hehe: )
I haven't played The Witcher so I'm not sure if it uses WASD or not
Hellgate: London - make sure you get the community Revival patch. http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=fd686de589f85e6bc46fe24d4a706f7c (you will need to register to the forums in order to download the patch, as well as to be able to download some of the cool user-made mods available, too).\
Overlord (more of an RPG hybrid than your traditional RPG game...)
Rise of the Argonauts

Wizardry (turn based with a "party" system).

The Witcher ~ enhanced.

Seconding the Arx Fatalis. Get the latest patch as well (and source code if you're so inclined). Both on http://bethblog.com/index.php/2011/01/14/arx-fatalis-source-code-patch-released/.
