Creating Textures

I'm looking at creating textures for the first time and I see that there seem to be some pretty good tutorials on doing this, but I have what might be a stupid question :)

If you are creating a complex texture like armour, how do you know how it is going to wrap? Is there some kind of grid or guide available? Or does everybody just take an existing armour texture and use that as a guide? Similarly for other items that obviously have more than one section to the texture.

Obviously I have only done the most rudimentary texturing!
