sleeping, dreams and nightmares

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 4:09 pm

wouldent it be scarier to go through a movie clip than read a little popup? in both oblivion and morrowind (probably daggerfall too) you would have text describing something horrific along the path to vampirism/ dagoth ur. but as nice and descriptive as this was- a short and confusing little movie would have disturbed the player more. one thing that would be very cool is if you had an interactive dream- imagine fighting a terrifying dragon that defeats you and then you wake up. or perhaps walking into a tomb, walking down the great hall, when suddenly a group of vampires at the end start walking towards you muttering threatening stuff loud enough for you to hear them. as you run away you become slower and slower. until the vampires get you.

about sleeping- well i want to be able to sleep in dungeons and set up campsites to sleep at. i also want first person getting in/out of bed animations. the game should NEVER force the player to change perspective. but the animations should be fast and not interrupt gameplay.

I like the idea, but I don't want dreams every time I sleep. Maybe something like Morrowind/Dragon Age where you would have story-triggered dreams occasionally. But not every time. Not only would it get annoying needing to sit through a cutscene every time you sleep, but there couldn't be an infinite number of dreams available, meaning there would be repeats, meaning it would be immersion breaking and even more boring.

If there are going to be dreams at all, I would want them to be quest related, and fairly rare.

It would only be appropriate to dream in quests, not when you're sleeping.

Just very diffuse dreams. Not just story-related ones but maybe also sometimes when you sleep and you've been infected by a werebeast virus (Daggerfall), or if you've recently been close to death, you might get nightmares, like really short and blurry clips for maybe five seconds.

I'd like standard dreams as well, there could be, once again, short, blurry clips of what's happened. Like a resume of what's happened since you last slept but you can just barely make out what's happening.

Sleep anywhere, so long as you're carrying a bedroll of some sort.

No dreams. No. No, no, no. They've already soured TES with minigames. Morrowind (sans Bloodmoon) only had one cutscene that I can remember - right at the end of the main quest. The cutscene really meant something. It's the one point where it really suits to have your game interrupted by a cinematic. Text works just fine for everything else. I really don't see what the gaming industry has against text...

I'd like to sleep anywhere, with bedrolls being purchasable - but sleeping in a "high risk" area could result in you being attacked during the night (better than it just saying "you can't sleep right now" imo).
And no dreams for me, so I didn't vote.

I should be able to sleep anywhere even an owned bed. But there should also be a risk that the owner of the bed will catch you.

Playable dreams sounds neat but reading it in a text box feel homey. Comfortable or something.

If the do go back to text boxes i'd like them to be weirder/scarier.

I'd like cinematic dreams where appropriate. Certainly not every time you sleep but the times when text would ordinarily be used. Like the stages of Vampirism for example. While the text is alright, I feel it would be more poignant for the player to actually a semblance of it. Even if it's a few short seconds.

What if I don't want dreams at all?

+1 except in very rare and unique situations, such as when you are becoming a vampire, or when Sithis/Night Mother visit you in your sleep

Dreams can be a awesome narrative tool.

What if you dream about something and then the thing you dreamed about actually happens in the game?
Or if you sleep in a tavern and the game makes you think you're waking up like usual, but in fact you're in a nightmare.
Or if you sleep somewhere, wake up and have a dream of something that happened at the exact same spot 100 years ago (like a murder or something)

But, it's only something they should do in a few unique quests. You can't get away with using the same idea 7 times.

It would be nice to have a portable bedroll that you could take into caves to use to level up inside instead of having to go all the way back to a city. Such an item would probably need to be really expensive or earned through a relatively difficult quest though.

Dreams? Eh. The series has done a good job of dreams already with Morrowind and Oblivion. Some text is all we really need. After all, it's difficult to remember your dreams when you wake up sometimes, so it's not going to be just as vivid as "real life" in Tamriel. Making short clips for dreams is just excessive and that time could be spent on much better things. The only way I could see a playable dream being justified is if it's some type of quest directly involving Vaermina.

Also, I hate prophetic dreams. It's such a huge cliche to have someone dream about something and then have it come true. It ruins the suspense for me. Morrowind did it well. Dreaming during the Main Quest not only made sense (because that's how Dagoth Ur spoke to his followers and made Dreamers) but it also did not reveal any type of information and nothing in those dreams actually came to pass.
