Thief creation

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:04 pm

Hello,
I have created a khajit, thief, he will be my first (sucessful) roleplaying character. I have got a class, and a very
basic idea for him, but would like help to flesh him out.
Name: Vo'bar
Class: Petty Thief
Skills:
Sneak
Marksman
Mercantile
Speechcraft
Security
Athletics
Acrobatics
Guilds:
Thieves guild
Maybe dark brother hood

Thats pretty much all I've got, however I have two restrictions for him.
1 Can only get money from stealing
2No armour, ever
Also, when he is rich and powerful he may acciadantally kill a friend and then join the dark brother hood, or he might become a drunk, skooma addicted gambler, I haven't decieded.
btw this is my first post and I love :tes:

Well your choice of Khajiit is a good one for a thief build. The skill choices look good too as well as the guild choices. I don′t know what else to say than good luck and welcome to the forums.

Too bad I′m currently out of http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg, otherwise... oh wait! I guess I wasn′t! :D

Current 'choice' count: With this one, four

Yes welcome to the forums :)

That looks OK for a thief and yes the Dark Brotherhood is my favourite guild.

Prehaps not wearing any armor ever may hamper you a bit but I'm not to sure through playing mainly ranged Mages. Prehaps you could think about restricting yourself to say just a full set of Leather Armor. With a Sneak skill of 50 the weight of your boots shouldn't make to much difference and as the armor is a dark brown you will still blend in with the shadows.

I have only ever done the Dark Brotherhood once but you could try writing it in that he was caught in the act of stealing from a City Offical and had to kill him to cover up the high profile heist, thus allowing him to join the Dark Brotherhood.

I'm not totally sold on the skill choices, but that's a separate thing. I metagame the skill choices - that is, I pick the things that will work best within the context of the way the skill system works in the game, rather than the things that fit the character best (it's a shame that they're not the same, but anyway....) It works either way, so that's mostly just personal preference and I won't bother you with it beyond mentioning it.

Just generally, the character sounds fine. I'd only have two suggestions:

First - try to be conscious of the character all the time. For instance, you get a quest offered by someone. Don't just rush off and do it because that's what you'd do. Stop and think about the character. Is that what he'd do? That's the important part. To successfully roleplay, everything has to make sense within the context of a given character. If the character turns out to be a coward, then the odds re that he's not going to go charging off to attack the skooma dealers in Greyland, no matter what you might think about the idea. Sort of make believe you're watching a movie - the character in the movie is a certain type of person and thus does certain things certain ways. It doesn't matter what you think about it - that's what the character is and that's what the character does.

Second - be wary of trying to set up too much of it in advance. That ties in with the first - if you get into the story with a particular character and it turns out that that character isn't the sort to do what you had planned, then that's the way it goes. The character's in charge, so your plan to make him do this or that is wasted. I find I'm better off just creating a rough outline of a character (like Khajiit thief who doesn't wear armor), then just diving into the game, paying attention to the character, and seeing how it works out.

If the character ends up doing something with which you disagree, or better yet, something you didn't even consider, then you know you're doing it right.

i don't like your skill choices, most of them seem...useless. Maybe toss athletics for alchemy. Imo at high levels marksman takes too many shots to kill people without a good poison backing you up

athletics
acrobatics
speechcraft
mercantile

aren't really good major skills, unless you're doing it for RP purposes. I would suggest replacing some of them w/

illusion - great for a stealth character, nuff said
mysticism - though an underpowered skill, detect life is a sneaking characters best friend.
conjuration: the all powerful summon, great meat shield for a squishy rouge.
restoration: great for buffing agility / marksman / speed etc

and maybe:

Alteration: as an alternative to security. That mini game can get annoying and so does stocking up on lockpicks since they are only sold by 1 vendor IIRC.

consider blade as a major combat skill: I really enjoy bow for RPing but blade is more practical, imo. Bow can be tough to level FYI. But can be great fun so it is kind of a toss up. If your going bow train alchemy heavily as a minor, a poison sneak attack works wonders to turn the tide in your favor vs. multiple eneimes

The is build gives you your basic stealth / mage. It might be a little to magic-centric for a pure rouge type, but offers alot more versatility and utility. Pay attention to pumping will / int to give you enough mana.

Just my 2 cents, welcome to the forum and have fun :)

Lockpicks are only sold by one vendor who is not in the Thieves Guild.
Once in the Guild, however, lockpicks are always readily available for purchase from certain of your colleagues.
