Far too many crashes when entering new places

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 4:04 pm

Hi guys

After struggling for weeks with this problem, I've finally decided to post a forum thread about my problem as I seem to have exhausted all Googleable solutions and still the problem persists.

Basically, my game can run wonderfully smoothly for ages at a time then - for seemingly no reason - it will have an annoying phase where I can't enter/exit *anywhere*, or save my game, without crashing to the desktop. I've removed all Fallout entries from FFDShow, tweaked a bunch of settings, closes all background apps, etc, etc - have even tried blowing myself up (which, strangely, does occasionally help). But the only solution that has actually proven to allow me to continue my game is to uncheck all my mods in FOMM {if any FOMM devs are reading this: please add a 'select/deselect all' button to the next release!}, load the game, enter the new area, save, exit, then load back with all the mods. However this is a major pain because I then lose all my Modded Weapons and Classic Fallout Weapons, and it is only a matter of time before the problem rears its ugly head again.

I'm going to type out my mod load order below. If anyone can provide any input into changes I should make, or even a mod I should consider removing, I would greatly appreciate your wisdom as I'm all out of ideas.

Have you tried FO3edit masterupdate function ? If no, you really should, it fix a whole lot of issues with the game.
If it doesn't work, try disabling MMM. Does it change anything ? If yes, go to Arwen's realism tweaks page on FO3nexus and download the Arwen's MMM patch esp. You might have a problem with some supermutants spawn. This patch does not require the use of her realism tweak.

Thanks for the reply. How do I use the masterupdate function, exactly?

Go and get this...it changed FO3 for me!

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8629

It has all the secrets of FO3Edit in it, including the Master Restore and Update functions!

You don't have Broken Steel installed, but you are using both the MMM and the UFP Broken Steel plugins.

I would also recommend turning off the Unofficial Fallout Patch, since many people say that its out of date and causes more problems than it fixes.

That had me worried for a minute there - double-checked and realised I just missed it out when typing the list. Broken Steel is definitely there. :)

I'll have a try of these other tips first, and if still no luck then will remove Unofficial Patches to see if that makes a difference. Presumably I should un-tick all of them, including the patches for DLC?

Yep, just uncheck them all and make sure to recreate your merged patch afterward.

Before you do that though, have you tried to use BOSS to sort your load order? That can help quite a bit with stability.

Chances are Very good that if you MasterUpdate with Fo3Edit, your crash problems on entering other cells will vanish.

Agree with Sole Survivor that using BOSS to validate your load order is a good thing.

I've not heard of BOSS. My load order is mostly derived from ReadMe's and FOMM's auto-load-orderer.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10193 is a mod auto sorter that works really well, and the masterlist is updated very frequently http://better-oblivion-sorting-software.googlecode.com/svn/FO3Masterlist/.

Thanks for the link, Sole Survivor.

Okay, I think I've just done this whole FO3MasterUpdate thing. Will boot up now and see how it performs.

Do I need to double-click on FO3MasterUpdate.exe before launching Fallout 3 every time, or only when I make changes to the mods?

Also: if I want to remove one of the mods from startup, do I need to do anything special (i.e. run this 'MRM' thing)?
