Imperial with sack cloth pants and sandals.

Live in the Waterfront in the 'Abandonded Shack' (note that this is not the shack you can buy). It has two bed rolls you can use and all 7 sacks in there are safe.

Nice idea Acadian. Another suggestion, maybe a beast race though? An Argonian or a Khajiit living in either Bravil or Leyawiin slums... I don't know exactly where you could sleep, maybe the Skooma Den in Bravil, if you also want to make him a drug addict eheh

Regarding playstyle, I think you could use Hand to Hand for combat, as a homeless and poor guy wouldn't have much money, or eventually use a Iron Dagger (which would definitely be more limiting during the whole game).

I don't know if you want to RP or just play "Hobo-style"...

Can't think of any more suggestions. Good luck! ;)

A hobo type would be of "no fixed abode" so just use the various camps (after clearing the Bandits out!). There are a few camps that don't have respawning residents that you could consider as regular bases to move between - Atrene, Bawnwatch, Fisherman's Rock and Crestbridge. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Campsites

You might consider the tattered robe as an alternative garb.

If you're on PC, there's a brilliant mod called http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15146 that'd work out well. It's a pillow. That's it - just a pillow. It's cheap (you should be able to scrounge up enough gold from crates to pay for it easily) and is available from pretty much any general merchant. And since it's not a full bedroll, it doesn't require level ground or any sort of set-up - you just drop it and you can sleep on it.

i love this idea, i guess the most realistic take on the wandering adventurer, pennyless, fighting for the gold to scraqe by one more day

As far as specializations go i would say stealth for sure, if you could do magic, or fight monsters head on you could have probably found work with the mages or fighters guild.

For a race it would have to be a more mundane race i guess, imperial, bosmer, argonian, khajit, maybe dunmer. Wear sack cloth clothes, or one of the more grimy outfits from the isles. Fighting with a dagger, or bow made of some cheaper metal or style. BAM, you have the humble hobo

Of course, the first time you fight off a bandit and win, you'll have to explain to yourself why your guy can't take the bandit's obviously better clothing and weapon. :)

easy, the dude you just killed, he wore a strange size...it doesn't fit you. An even harder thing to explain is why you wouldn't just grab all the gold off of these dead bodies, or pawn their stuff off for cash

The clothing is all ripped up and covered in blood. Nobody would buy it.

The 10 gold pieces you might find would feed you for about ten days (that is, if you can eat for a day with only a single coin).

Eat for a day with a single coin? Helena probably spends 10 septims on food daily. A loaf of bread is two septims!

Stealth would be the way to go for the reasons of the Fighters and Mages Guilds would be able to find you work anyway. Prehaps you could try RP'ing it that you start out as a Hobo and the Grey Fox finds you begging on the Waterfront in the Imperial City and takes you on as an Informant for him in and around the Imperial City.

Food costs vary depending on where you eat and or live. It might be 5 septims for a loaf of bread in the Imperial City where as in the slums of Leyawin it might be 2 septims and for how long is a Loaf of Bread going to keep a fighting Hobo going?

As for weapons I would most probs use Rusty Iron weapons and restrict myself to prehaps just a Dagger maybe a cheap home made bow and arrow if you are able to write a mod for it. Unless he found one on a dead body I don't think he would be able to get even a Rusty Iron Bow, and the arrows would be too expensive.

I may actually have to try this myself aswell for laughs and giggles.

Yeah I agree with most of the comments here, you could stick with the crappy clothes you start off with in the intro and don't change them ever. And yeah iron weapons, just a dagger or maybe a club and live in that Abandoned Shack by the waterfront. You could also try stealing stuff from people and getting caught all the time, to ensure you never get to amass a large amount of money or good items.
