Facebook Skyrim Scam?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 8:13 pm

If this isn't something I should make a topic about, I apologize. Didn't see any rule violations on my end.

I didn't see any topics on this but I was wondering if I'm the only one who's seen this. I've noticed this ad cropping up the last few days on Facebook. Something called the Beta Key Fan Club.
The ad has a pic of the Skyrim logo etc and goes like this: "Want to play games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim before public release? Join the Beta Key Fan Club on Facebook!"

The internet never ceases to amaze me. This is just wrong. Granted if you fall for something so blatantly stupid you deserve to get punked, but still.

Anyone else seen this? Thoughts?

I haven't seen this and it doesn't surprise me. Many people fell for the "Cataclysm bete invite" bots... But hopefully they will have more sense with this seeing as how Bethesda Game Studios doesn't do open beta's.

I don't know it, but it doesn't sound like a scam, per se.
Just sounds misleading. "Games like Skyrim.
So, it sounds like a beta key club where they exchange keys for different types of games. And they advertise it by using the latest and hottest upcoming games.

It's a classic scam where they promise access to anything on a banner, but when you actually click you find out that "anything" does not really include what the banner promised. It's used a lot with downloads. I can almost guarantee that if you google "download Skyrim" you'll find a lot of sites with links to exclusive "pay to download" sites that promise you'll be able to download Skyrim. Once you'll click, however, you'll get a message that you're not registered, so the download is not allowed for you. Once you register (by paying) and click again, you'll get 404...

Doing some googling, it seems to be a group that attempts to get beta keys for mmos and mmorpgs and hands them out to people who join their facebook group.

Since Skyrim is neither, I'm going to guess they are trying to get more people by using "like Skyrim" to catch people's attention. http://www.betakeygiveaway.com/

The line on the bottom of that page has :

This is truly a legitimate offering.

In addition, I have just been informed by the Capitalist Bank of Nigeria, that 12 years ago, a sum of forty million American dollars ($40000000) was deposited in your name. I would like to offer my services as a proxy to return you this money, however I require a some of three thousand American dollars ($3000), and one copy of "The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim" in order to complete the transaction. If you may please send this payment by way of Western Union Money Transfer, I would be highly appreciative to return your forty million to you.

Don't make fun of people who fall for scams.
