more to come as I introduce new characters.

7E 234 Sun's Dusk

The lush jungle air was thick and humid. The heat so vivid that Varius could taste it. This land is Elsweyr, southern Elsweyr to be exact, home of the Khajiit. The Imperial Army already controlled the land, if can call a desert land, north of Torval, or what was left of it. The Imperial's razed all of the major cities except Riverhold and most of the villages in their campaign over Elsweyr.

Varius could feel the sweat lining the inside of this helmet. They had been in this forest for three days and now as they marched on the last remaining stronghold of the Khajiit, or as the Imperials now referrer to them, the Elsweyrn.

"Apparently Senchal was a major city years ago," Varius' words where directed to his Sergeant.

"Yes sir, that is what the reports say," The Sergeant turned his head to see that the wind that had caught the Imperial flag had stopped, and the flag now lay flat, "Sir, the flag, something is coming."

Varius noticed it too, it was unknown to the Imperials as to how the Elsweyrn achieved this feat, but they were able to calm the wind right before an attack, "I do not know how they do this, it is almost like magic," Varius smiled after the word magic.

The Sergeant let out a laugh before replying, "That could be true if magic was real and not a fairytale, but sir we should prepare for their charge."

"Battle line!" on Varius' command the men lengthened their shortened and shorten their columns. In a matter of seconds the lines went from four men by thirty men, to thirty men by four men.

Varius turned to look at his flanks, the other columns of the Imperial Army were doing the same. Varius then drew his sword and turned his attention to the jungle in front of them and what was to come out of it.

The Imperial's did not have to wait long before they could hear what was coming and only seconds after they could see what must have been the remnant of the Elsweyrn fighting force. About one hundred beasts of every size and shape charged the Imperial lines.

"People should accept that they are conquered," Varius stated to his Sergeant.

"I couldn't agree more Lieutenant."

Lieutenant Varius sixus widened and angled his stance, and positioned his shield in front in a braced manner. Varius stood at the corner of the right side of the first rank. His plumed helmet stood as a marker for his troops.

The Sergeant stood next and carried a six foot wooden pole, that is sharpened on the end, to control the formation of the ranks. The man now stood there with the pole extended down the cohort stopping the men from advancing farther.

At this point the Imperials had only seconds before the wave of Elsweyrn slammed into their line. The entire cohort had their shields braced and prepared for what was to come. This was an experienced cohort, well experienced as far as the Legion was concerned. As the Imperial Legion was concerned, as soon as you entered combat you where considered experienced. Compared to the other cohorts that were deployed, Foot Cohort 33, was as fresh as they came. This was their first campaign, they were of three fresh men assembled with two other cohorts specifically for the conquest of Elsweyr.

The giant cats slammed into the shield wall of the cohort and where pushed back by a powerful shield thrust. The legionnaires then quickly cut down the staggering Elsweyr, the swords wielded by the legion where designed for close quarters combat like this.

Varius did the same, he used his shield to stagger the beast and then impelling the defenseless creature. Then a second Elsweyrn fell to the same fate as his predecessor. The beasts continued to throw themselves against the wooden wall of the Imperials. Varius noticed that his Sergeant was now impelling the beast with the sharpened end of the wooden pole.

Most of the Elsweyrn where unarmed, but instead using their claws. These claws where ineffective against the steel armor, or even the wooden shields of the legion.

As Varius impelled one of the few remaining beasts he heard a blood turning roar. The largest Elsweyrn he had ever seen was charging toward the lines. The beast was white with black stripes, the Imperials called them, Dagon Khajiit. It was the only time that the Imperials used the name originally given to the Elsweyrn's.

With the first wave defeated the cohort braced for the new creature.

"Stagger formation!" Varius ordered and the cohort separated.

Varius hoped to diminish the number of casualties that the beast would cause. Suddenly a hailstorm of arrows crested over the heads of the Imperials. The rain of wood and iron impelled the giant creature causing it to collapse to the ground.

The Khajiit was not dead, it still stirred whimpered as a blue light began to glow around its body.

"We're not having any of this," Varius stated as he walked over the beast. Then thrust his sword into the beasts chest. Varius struggled to fully impel the beast because the animal's skin was hard like boiled leather, and the bones were hard like steel. Although in a few seconds the blue glow stopped and the beasts struggles ceased.

As Varius sheathed his sword he noticed his Sergeant approach him.

"Thank Akotosh, we only had one of them to contend with."

"Yes you are right, and about time the archers showed up. I know this was Knight-Captain Lex's doing. He never commits anymore men then needed at anyone given time."

The Sergeant nodded to Varius' comment as they approached the lines, "Sir, he have fifteen casualties. Five are dead."

"Thank you Sergeant. They died defending this world from the filth that inhabits it, may Talos watch over them," After brief pause for the dead, "Emperor Lucius Verus and the pro-council of the Four Kingdoms have declared the eradication of the Beasts in an effort to purify the land. The alliance of Mer and Men will do such that, so those that are able reform the lines! We have a schedule to met, our Valenwood allies are already assaulting Senchal.

to be continued....

Gladiator ;)

Note the bold parts.... Read them, ok good. You use the same word in such a short space quite a bit and it becomes very noticeable when reading and seeing the word "experienced" come up three times in two sentences. Also, you use the word cohort a lot, and while I know its a "specialized" word, I'm sure there are a few other words that you could use instead.

Varius did the same, he used his shield to stagger the beast and then impelling the defenseless creature.

I assume you mean impaling? You do it... a half dozen other times or so for the rest of the chapter.

Varius struggled to fully impel the beast

Impale?

Other than those things, its an interesting read :)

7E 234 Sun's Dusk

Fifteen minutes after the skirmish the army finally reached the edge of the jungle, and they could see the fort in the distance. The jungle stopped abruptly to reveal a bright white beach, with sand that appeared to glisten in the afternoon sun. It was then that Varius realized how hot it really was, in the jungle most of the sun was covered by the canopy and he and his men only have to worry about the humidity. Now they stood in the direct afternoon sun and the sand felt like it was reflecting heat back upwards.

"Stendarr, why?" Mumbled Varius as he adjusted his belt. He sank slightly into the sand with eat step he took.

The Legion began to walk down toward the beach head where the Fort was located. The water to their right was clear as the sky. As they walked they continuously had to change direction because there was ancient white pillars, remnants of walls, and other old buildings riddled the beach. The odd thing about these structures was that they where the exact same color as the sand.

When they first exited the jungle they noticed that a plume of smoke was rising from the fort, and when they where half way there, they could see why. The Bosmer had begun their attack, they had been using catapults to launch clay pots filled with a flammable liquid and large stones onto and on the fort. Other than that Varius did not know what was burning inside the fort.

The fort was not really a fort, but a fortress. The intelligence was wrong. The Imperials believed that Fort Senchel was a small one hundred by one hundred wooden fort.

"I do not think intell has been correct this whole theater. First they told us there was no desert, most of the country is dessert, then they told that the whole country was a desert. Well what did we find, a jungle. Now I am standing here looking at this fortress that is supposed to be a fort and shaking my head," Varius was clearly agitated.

"Well sir, I wish I could tell you that it gets better, but in my twenty years in the Legion this is the norm," The Sergeant replied, "But on the same note, intell normally doesn't tell us we are attacking a Palisade Fort and we arrive to find a stone walled keep surrounded by a Palisade."

"Well that is sort of a relief. You know Sergeant, we are almost at the Bosmer equipment, but I do not see their rearguard. In fact all I see is the tops of siege equipment,"

The way the embankment was angled the men could not see anything on the flat surface above. As the army marched up the embankment to the flat area and they could see why there weren't any Bosmer manning their equipment or stationed as rearguard.

"Lieutenant, I see why...."

"As do I Sergeant." Varius replied cutting of the Sergeant's words.

The bodies of the Bosmer army lay dead on the field, arrows sticking out of them like branches on a tree. The embankment had obstructed their view of the carnage and the Elsweyr new this. The Cohorts had played right into their trap.

"Fan out and check for survivors, maybe someone knows what happened here," Varius ordered and his men began to spread out and check the bodies.

Not more than five minutes into their search one of the troopers called out, "Lieutenant the sky!"

Varius looked up to see hundreds of black lines filling sky, turning the sky from day to night, "For battle lines! Defend at the ready!"

The troopers ran to return to their lines, but Varius noticed that not all of them would make it back to the formation in time, "Shields up! Defend where you are!" Varius could only hope that his men would make it through and that they would not fall to the same fate as the Bosmer.
