A (possible) MGE Distant Land issue

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:36 pm

Okay, so I'm not necessarily sure if this is a result of issues with MGE's distant land, but it certainly is only noticeable when I turn on distant land.

Anyway, my problem is that when I look at distances that are fairly far away (specifically places that have non-grass textures, like Red Mountain and most of the ashlands) the actual land doesn't look right. Instead of the usual grey, rockish textures on the mountain, from a distance it takes on a grass texture that gradually fades away as I get closer and closer. And whats worse is that elsewhere in the Ashlands this becomes visibly noticeable at an even shorter distance and is fairly immersion breaking to see grass fade away into rock when grass shouldn't even be there.

So, obviously, my question is what is causing this and how could I fix it?

Here is my distant land settings (if I need the settings i used for the creation wizard I can find those too)

100 Draw distance
(autoset enabled)
0 Distance Blur (I use SWG's Skies)
Min Size
Near: 220
Far:400
Very Far:500
All water reflection options turned off

What texture resolution did you use during the distant land generation?

Ok, so after messing with various settings and what not it still does not correct anything. I've done lowest textures and the highest and changed multiple other things and nothing solves the issue.

Well, I went through the processes of installing Morrowind Overhaul and with all the extra graphics mods the effect I'm describing, while still very much there, is also massively harder to capture in a screenshot, though not to the extreme it was before MO. Whether something different got changed between the MGE versions I was using or if something else helped lessen it IDK. Although now its hard to notice unless I really look for it.

However, I can say that the effect is a lot like how fog dissipates, except it isn't fog thats going away as I approach the landscape but a grass texture, if that helps.

Right now, with MO installed, it isn't that big of an issue but if there is a away to effectively eliminate it that would be nice.

look in the input section of mgegui. there you will find the macro editor which allows you to confirm a screenshot key. i took F12 because it's next to print screen ;)

I know how to set up a screenshot key. The thing is that its hard to actually capture what I'm talking about in an actual screenshot. Hence me not really being able to take one.

You can bind a screenshot key in the MGE macro editor. I use F12.

I did read your post. Relax.

It would just be easier to understand what you are talking about if you took two screens in series. One far away where you see grass like you say, then one close up where it turns into rocks. This obviously has something to do with blending and you probably just need to regenerate your DL but screens will make it more clear.

MGE distant land does not use the terrain textures exactly. Instead, it stretches one texture over the entire island and then overlays some random detail coloring over the ground. That's probably why the rock ends up looking like grass to you. You can "fix" it by replacing the detail texture.

And how does that work?

The texture is found in Data Files/Textures/MGE/Default and is named wold_detail.dds. It's a mess of white and black fuzz. If I remember correctly, white patches do not disturb the landscape texture, while black patches darken it. Be aware that this will affect the entire island; MGE only uses the one texture for everything.

[edit] Spelling.
