Compass Use

Post » Sun Aug 22, 2010 11:06 pm

A thought occurred to me after I read a post someone made about having snowstorms.

Imagine if... the accuracy of the compass was tied to a survival skill and/or perk(s). Whenever you change direction, the compass would only move exactly true if you had perfect directional ability. In this way, as you level up (and explore the map), you will get better at finding your way around.

Also, during bad weather conditions (rain, snowstorm, blizzard, fog, evil locusts) the accuracy would be lowered even more. Following the compass could actually lead you astray.

Thoughts? Opinions?

The compass in the ES games is a simple graphic representation to help you find your way, not a actual compass with a magnet.

Seriously? This post is not about semantics. The directional location display, which has radar and the God-like ability to pinpoint and perfectly discern places of interest is NOT AN ACTUAL COMPASS that you own. It's a make it easy to find stuff display.

My post was about how to make the game more immersive by making it work variably depending upon skill and situations.

Are you talking about quest markers? Or North South East West compass?

They are part of the same display. The Oblivion "compass" shows quest markers, and identifies places of interest like it has a satellite link and superpowers. It is not immersive.
