Best version to implement mods ?

Post » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:47 am

Hello everyone.
I have played Morrowind several times and even modded(used mods) some years ago, although i have been busy in life and now i come back interested in knowing what is the best version(Steam,GOTY retail, morrowind + each expansion retail, etc) to implement mods on.
I am asking this, because i remember people having issues with drm crashing and conflicting with mods.
Thx and have a good day.

I don't think there is really a "better" version, but I could be wrong. The GOTY edition is probably ideal since it comes with everything all together. The Steam version is probably the easiest to obtain, but it doesn't come with the Construction Set :(

GOTY would be ideal, because it includes the last official Bloodmoon patch. Otherwise you have to install the BM patch after you
install MW+both expansions (non-GOTY I mean.)
For the Steam version, you need to redate the BSAs for mods to work as intended, but it's not a big problem.
But as long as your running Version 1.6.1820 you can use both the unofficial patches and any mod you like.

GOTY for sure. As mentioned it has all the official patches applied.

I don't trust Steam one bit. Get the GOTY and never look back.

One more vote for GOTY retail.

Something that hasn't been brought up is that if you have the Steam version, I don't think you can have multiple installations. Well, you might be able to if you tinker with the exe, but the retail one is still your best bet. :)

I'll have to go with GOTY disk edition, too. But, if you're using Vista or Windows 7, don't forget to install the game in a separate directory - not Program Files. It'll save you a lot of trouble when you start adding the mods.

thx for the replies everyone.
GOTY retail it is :P
I have read around by googling that the GOTY retail version has a cd check that causes instability is there any patch that can remove it ?

Well, not legally. We cannot speak about it here. After you bought GOTY retail, make an .iso of it with the appropriate software and use it instead of the physical disc.

A CD check that causes instability? What!? Why on earth would Bethesda deem that acceptable?

I ask because I might eventually get the GOTY edition myself, as I don't have the expansion discs anymore.

If you don't want to have to have Morrowind in your disc drive to play. Then do what Mus said. Make an .iso of the main Morrowind CD, and mount it every time you play, that is what I do.

I personally love steam and use that copy of morrowind for the convenience. My best buy still has morrowind goty as of 2 weeks ago so if you really want the CD copy check there.

When Morrowind first came out it did check during playing that the CD was in the drive. IIRC, one of the official patches removed those constant checks so there is only a check when the game loads. Although I can't find that in the patch notes...

No, Dragon32, I don't think so? Isn't the check still there as of the last patch (or GOTY)? It seems so to me, can anybody confirm this?
