Do Skill Book Bonuses effect skill levelling?

Post » Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:11 pm

Hi folks, this is my first post on here so be gentle! ;) I've recently started up a new character,an Altmer Atronach (called Ripley) who I'm efficiently levelling. It's the first time I've tried this, all my previous characters were Dunmer assassin types who levelled up whenever they felt like it.I've found a few skill books already but not opened them, and any suspicious titles I'm not sure about also go unread, but stored for later reading.Basically what i want to know is,do you get a standard skill increase when you read these books, and therefore sometimes an unwanted level up that you're not ready for?

Cheers for the help!

Every skill book you read it advances a skill. Major or Minor.

If it advances your minor, you get a multiplier when you level up but it dose not advance your level meter.

If it advances your major (I think) you get a multiplier plus advances your level meter.

If Conjuration is your minor and you read a book that increases Conjuration, the Conjuration move from 10 to 11 but not your level bar. If the bar is on 50% it will stay there. But you get a multiplier for it. In your willpower I think.

If you major is light armour (I think) you get a multiplier and your level bar advance from 50% to 60% including the light armour bar which it rises for 50 to 51.

Its a yes.

There is a problem with that. It involes in the main quest. There are curtain books you have to read that advance your levels. You have to read them to advance.

If they're necessary it'll be ok,that can't be helped,I'll avoid reading the majority of other, non essential ones where possible though. It's not always obvious what skill you'll be levelling by the books title, and I'd hate to ruin the run of perfect 5's I'm on.I'm leaving the MQ until much later anyway,so those books won't be a problem,if at all,for a while. Thanks for the help.

The Mythic Dawn Commentaries? You don't have to read those or open them at all. I don't think there are any books that the main quest actually requires you to read.

For the sake of the main quest I read them. Anyway two of them will raise my major skills.
Finding skill books in this game is like finding needle in a hay stack.

At Buck Don't mention it. We here to help.

Does anyone know if there are any mods to counter act this? Unskilled Books for Morrowind has always been a vital mod for me. I'm too much of a lore buff, and like BuckFastNinja, I'm having my first run through efficiently leveling and don't want to break those +5 runs. :)

There's a problem with your approach. It's impossible to know which books will level you up in the first place. They don't look any different than any of the normal books and just the simple act of picking one up will activate the skill increase. So you'd have to avoid picking up or reading any books in the game, which isn't really all that practical. Some books are quite valuable as loot and others you have to read in order to advance a quest. You're being far too nit-picky trying to avoid skill increases that way, especially considering how few and far between they are.

All skill books have a value of 25 or more. Simply save the game before reading those. If it turns out to be a skill book, you can either keep the skill up or reload and avoid to suit your purpose.

Yes, this is the answer if one is really that particular about perfect leveling. I'm sure that most perfection-seekers also save before grabbing that sigil stone, in order to get the "right" one.

After all, some of those books will raise minor skills that the player is trying to raise.

It's this sort of nonsense that leaves me convinced that the vanilla leveling system svcks and should be replaced by a mod that makes more sense. I use KOBU myself so I never have to deal with these kinds of absurdities. Of course that's not an option if you play on a console.
