Question About BSA Extraction

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 5:39 pm

Hello all,

I haven't done this in some time and was wondering, what is the most current method (or tool used) to extract files from BSAs?

Thanks! :)

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Utilities.Detail&id=32 is easy to use and I have never had a problem with it .

The BSA Browser GUI is buggy and won't notify you when it finishes extracting, and also usually won't extract all the files.

So use the command line tools that come with BSA Browser, it's something like bsapack -unpack and it is reliable.

I've heard of that, but have never experienced anything like that, and I've used it quite a lot.
EDIT: although, I have never used it for extracting the entire BSA. Just individual files.

... and it's easier than using command line, for most people.

Where "easier" is defined as spending hours tracking down the 1% of the files that it failed to extract.
The good thing is that it most of the time, it's more like 90% of the files that are missing.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Much appreciated :foodndrink:

Sadly, I'm not having much luck with the BSA pack command line tool. When I attempt to run it, it stays open only for a brief second and then disappears.

I'm able to use the browser to unpack the BSa in question but am afraid to rely on that if it doesn't always work correctly.

Try this:
1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. OR simply press Windows+R and type in: cmd
2. Change directory to wherever your BSA tools are, e.g.:
cd \users\Simbelmyne\Desktop\BSABrowser
3. Type bsapack and see if it gives you any help. If not, try bsapack -? or bsapack -help
4. Make a directory to put the results in, e.g.: md outputfolder
5. You will end up running something like: bsapack -extract "c:\morrowind\whatever.bsa" outputfolder

If you can't figure it out, the graphical BSA Browser might work for you. It definitely did NOT for me. I needed it to be reliable because I was running Tamriel Rebuilt textures through Ordenador and then re-packing it into a new BSA.

One way to check if your files are reliably extracted is with File- or Folder Properties in Windows Explorer. The contents extracted from the BSA should be roughly the same size as the BSA file itself. Also, BSA Browser does correctly list the number of files found inside of the BSA, IIRC, so that number of files can be checked, too.

I never was able to unpack the BSA using the command prompt. I was however able to list and then unpack the contents using the BSA Browser GUI and then, as you suggested, verify that I had the same number of files afterwards using Windows Explorer.

Thanks again to you both :foodndrink:
