Is PYFFI worth it ?

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 7:55 pm

Hi all,

Before the end of the year (probably december first, 2010), I will buy a new gaming computer. At that point, I will install all the mods I want for oblivion (FCOM and etc).

Is it worth it to use PYFFI ? It is simple to use ?

Yes, it is simple to use, and, yes, it is worth it. (See the first post of the site thread in my sig for the simple instructions.)

and imminently even more worth it... some new and fairly significant optimizations are going to be in next version (being tested (and one is still being coded) right now)

It's astoundingly easy to use, if not always quick to use. ;) Or to complete, rather. But that's what happens when I go PyFFIing bloody huge mods. Heh. In general, it won't even take long. So, in every way, well worth it.

By comparing the in and out directories (that's how I run it now) I can even see a considerable drop in collective "files-size", in some cases. It's evidently gutted some files - and not in a bad way. Unfortunately, I didn't do a direct comparison of FPS. But I suspect there has been a real gain.

Sorry for slight hijack, but which is the best guide to PyFFying the vanilla meshes? Tomlong has a http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1064823-tesivpositive-performance-optimization-info/ and Blade Of Mercy says that he PyFFies "Architecture, clutter, dungeons, furniture, landscape, plants, rocks and sky", but is there a more clearcut guide from unpacking the bsa (done) to which meshes to optimize to repacking them?

EDIT: Perhaps Tomlong's guide is all I need? I'm following that now.

Blade of Mercy wrote that guide a number of PyFFI versions ago. The latest version takes care of most of the problems the old version had, so the skip list in version 2.1.4 suffices, with a few exceptions. All of the exceptions I am aware of are posted in the site's thread. (See my sig.)

Thanks. Yes, I'm following that now. It seems to take forever (after +1 hour the output is only c. 50 mb). Guess I'll watch a movie or something.

Yup, I slept on it, two nights in a row. I think I http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/lists/mybainlist for four days...and still managed to skip OOO. :(

I used the latest pyffi build and did everything without separating any folders and I've had no problems at all with it, as mentioned pyffi can determine what to pyffi now without having to separate folders :)

I started PyFFiying the architecture folder (figured it would give the most performance gain) and it's indeed taking forever. Good thing i didn't just right click on the meshes folder :lmao:

yes and for that reason if you are just starting I'd suggest waiting one version... collision (significant ingame perfermance boost - one mesh I optimized went from 20 down to 8 collision vertices... my initial testing case) and animation (don't yet know if this will have any actual increase in performance or not) optimization is imminent... and collision is one of the worst things for performance so why bother doing it now just to do it again in a couple weeks? (and the next versions of the FCOM BSA will have these shiny new optimizations - testing them out right now to make sure they don't cause any unintended side effects but I'm fairly confident they won't)

Thanks. I'll finish architecture as it has run almost all day, but I'll certainly run it in stages from now on. Might wait for the upcoming release before continuing.

BTW, would it be OK to PYFFI my already PYFFIed meshes with the new version, or would I have to optimize them from scratch, PYFFIing the originals?

there shouldn't be any problems doing it either way (at least logically there should't and I've never found any difference and never heard of anyone having any difficulties with them). However there won't be really any noticeable time different in processing and some early versions did make mistakes so if it has been a really long time you might as well run from scratch.

Should I PYFFI more than the vanilla game ? is there anything else that should be PYFFI'ed ?

"Should" is up to you. If you want to see what I have PyFFI optimized (except for OOO, which I missed accidentally): http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/lists/mybainlist. Anything that adds a lot to the game, whether lots of different items or lots of copies of the same items, are worth PyFFI-ing: quests, house mods, clutter mods, overhaul mods, etc.
