Magic The Gathering

Post » Fri Sep 10, 2010 5:36 am

I have never played card games before. I bought some just for the looks but never to play. My son wanted to try this game, so I bought 2 decks from someone who wanted to sell some of thier cards. She made me two decks. No rules came with it, and she forgot I didn't know how to play.

So is there anywhere I can go to read up on the rules and learn how to play the game. Is there an easy way to learn this game? I don't really care for it, but my son does, so I will learn how to play, so he can learn how to play and then go to the club and play with others.

Another problem I have, is, I had them seperated. 2 decks one for him, one for me. Well he put them in a binder, (so excited and happy) but now they are mixed up. Will I be able to tell what is what and keep divide back into 2 decks?

I don't know where to start, so I thought I would come here and ask for help.

All help would be appreciated.

*edit* I have found the rule book from the online Magic site. I tried clicking on thier tuturial but it goes to Youtube which says it's private. WTF? So can anyone explain to me easily how to play so I can teach my son.

Also I noticed there is a Magic game for the 360 Xbox Live. Is this the sme thing? Should I try the demo out? Will this help me teach my son and myself to learn how to play the game?

I'd recommend trying the demo but not the full game. It's really more like a very limited version of MTG. After you've messed around with the demo for a while you'll know the bare essentials. Then you should try http://wololo.net/wagic/download/. It has a lot more cards and better reflects a traditional game, plus you can test cards against an AI opponent to see how everything works.

If you still need help just search on youtube for "how to play magic the gathering". There's several tutorials out there. One of them is bound to work.

I haven't played Magic (though you'll find a decent number of people here who have, which certainly helps) but I know the basics...

Your basic decks, if your friend was kind, had perhaps two different colors for each... Some have just one, several will have 3, but it's rarer to see more because it's harder to get the cards you need if you don't have the right color of mana to tap. So, separate out all the cards into their individual colors first. The basic ones are red, green, blue, black and white. If you're lucky you'll have 2 to 4 piles. If 2, then you've already got your deck. If not, you might have to figure out which colors belong together... Certain cards may give you clues (ie, they'll ask for two different types of mana to tap). If you're unlucky, there might be cards from one color in both decks. If that's the case, seek your real-life Magic friends to sort it out for you!

The new cards have some really odd ball colors that bug me a lot. red is not red but a bit pinkish, the hell. The WoTC guys got weirder and weirder.
