Should I go back and play the other Fallouts?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:29 am

I have played RPGs since I got the Dragon Warrior game free with a year membership to Nintendo power. I some how went by without ever hearing about the game Fallout. 1 - 2 , BoS and anyothers that were out...never heard of. The more I read about them they seem to be a better shadowrun (which I loved shadowrun).

My question is after playing fallout 3 I really enjoy the world destruction theme the game has. I really want to experience all the series as to offer, but not sure if I'll be able to sit through the old fallouts now.

Should I purchase the FO 1-2 now? or at least 2?

Yes, you should play both of them. The graphics may be sub par for today's generation of games, but you will love the gameplay. :)

If you're not sure, Gametap has FO1 free.

I just started Fallout 2 and I love it. I don't like the first one so much because of the time limit.

I had gaptap before purchasing Fallout 3 and did see those games listed. Unfortunetly they had a website error in which it would not let you download them for a period of time. I canceled the account because nearly all the games would not run on my new system.

I know FO 1 has a time limit but I also saw somewhere that the time limit was doubled at some point? So that the limit didn't seem like an issue if you wanted to mess with everything. IDK if thats true or not.

If its not. Fallout 2 will be bought shortly.

In the game you can purchase a time extension of about 100 days. More than enough time to do and see everything without touching the MQ. However, if you follow the story, you loose the time limit 1/3-1/2 the way through the game.

I could have swore their official patch completely removed the time limit.

The patch removed the second time limit for defeating the Master and his army, not the first time limit for finding the water chip.

Oh that's right. Once you find the chip though you can just do whatever for awhile heh.

Should definatly play fallout tactics more stratagy based but you get to control a brotherhood squad and do misions through out the wasteland
i definatly think they should do something similar again after this current fallout 3 release

If you're a fan of old school RPGs I recommend giving the old Fallouts a try. I just started Fallout 1 and it's a good time killer. I think I'm going to put FO 1 and FO 2 on my work laptop so I can play them when i'm on planes or in hotels when I travel.

Sweet. I lost my FO1 cd and have only been able to find my disc for FO2, so this is great news for me!

And yes, they're totally worth playing. They're a lot harder than FO3 so make sure you save often and in multiple slots.

A lot of people, myself included, missed them when they were released.

There's no reason why not, many people (not just the vocal hardcoe) still play them even now. Just don't expect the same game experience as FO3. You might find them harder to get into at first, but all good things come to those who persist. Play 1 first would be my advice, it's still the best Fallout. Try to drop preconceptions and don't forget that it's not an ego-stroker or save-the-world-hero-sim type of game, so don't be embarrassed to run away!!

You can buy 1 & 2 very cheaply http://www.gog.com/en/page/fallout_promotion/pp/fe5dbbcea5ce7e2988b8c69bcfdfde8904aabc1f.

You definitely should. I'm replaying them as we speak. At least until I can afford to do some major upgrades to my PC for FO3. *** tuition is killing me.

What Mario was to the 2-d platformer, Fallout was to isometric turn-based RPG. If they had been console games instead of PC (I realize they wouldn't have been as good without the mouse control scheme, but I'm referring to the market share), they would have been on par with Final Fantasy.

Sadly, they died out with the rest of the isometric turn-based games as everything had to be real-time, adrenaline-charged, and multiplayer to be successful. Who knows, if FO BOS had been a real-time RPG and retained that distinctive Fallout "attitude", maybe FO would be on its 5th or 6th game as a successful RT RPG franchise like all the D20 games (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Knights, and KOTOR for those who don't know what D20 is).

What I think that Bethesda has really hit on in FO 3 is that FO is all about the quirky 50s quasi-humorous overall feel of the game. You can turn FO into almost any RPG genre you want it to be as long as you keep going back to that overall aesthetic.
