Wierd fallout 1 glitch

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:33 am

Having completed fallout 3 I decided to go and play the previous games but I have a weird glitch with fallout 1. Basically the screen keeps going black, moving the mouse around clears it away as does moving the camera but it is extremely annoying. Anyone know how to fix this?

Not exactly, but a tip is to hit C to open and close a window which will clear the screen faster than the mouse cursor.

Its not a glitch, its from illegally remaking this game.

The only way this would happen was if you downloaded it from a torrent or illegal site :swear:

All my friends who downloaded this game illegally have this problem + sometimes no backgound music,
I'm gonna be decent and wait till I have enough money to legally re-buy this game and enjoy it as it should.

You basically just admitted to stealing off Bethesda, nice move.

That's not true, I've had the same problem previously and I did not download my copy.

Same here. I got out my old copy of Fallout 1 while waiting for Fallout 3 to arrive, and had this problem along with a few other glitches (sound turning itself off, all colors getting...um...fringed with green, I guess...). I was able to solve them by following some instructions online to make the game compatible with Windows XP. I forget what, exactly.

I bought my Fallout 1 in a White Label bundle with Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics and I get the black screen thing too, really annoying.

You mean there is supposed to be background music? I never hear anything apart from rats going splat :P

Im an owner of both a legit first ed copy that I remember it occasionaly happening on a P2 system, and an owner of a white box copy where it regularly happens on a Athlon 64 system

Right, now back to you OP

Yeah, the black is a bug. I havent found away around it except to go to another screen, and come back.

Someoene else mentioned the background noise issue in another thread. Try a humoungous install first, and if it doesnt resolve, try that fix.

I had that black screen problem, too. Here is how to fix it:

In Windows XP / Vista click the Start button, and find and click "Run". In the type box type in msconfig and hit Enter and your startup panel should appear. At the top there are several tabs. Click the right-most one marked "Startup". There is a buttom marked "Disable All" located on the bottom-right just above the button marked "Help". Click on "Disable All" then "Apply" and "Ok". You will need to restart your computer.

This will work with Fallout 2 as well. I have no idea about Fallout Tactics. Happy gaming.

You didn't do the "Humungous Install"

1 Uninstall Fallout and Re-install Fallout using the Humungous Install option in the menu.

2 Check your Fallout folder sound/music. I bet it is empty because cheap White Label didn't install the music files. Go to your "My Computer" folder and right-click the CD and choose "Explore". Go into Fallout 1/sound/music and note the .acm files. Those files are the music and you should copy and paste them into the correct folder.

Again, happy gaming. I suggest reading a FAQ on S.P.E.C.I.A.L. before you choose your stats, traits, tags, and skills.

I too purchased my game and had the same problem. I also did the humongous install. I think it has something to do with windows XP compatibility.

mankykid1, what you're spewing it's utter errr... self-censored.
First, your data is highly inaccurate. Bethesda never worked on the first two Fallout games. It was Interplay's Black Isle (check wikipedia, in case you still don't knwo who they were). Second the old versions and the White Label versions are having a lot of problems with XP. At the date, the most stable versions are the ones from Fallout Collection (around 8-10$) and from gog.com (a direct2drive, metaboli kind of site for old games). So before talking, check your facts. The sound problem is related to the game's lack of support for modern sound cards. And one more thing, kid: the original Fallout games didn't had any kind of protection. And in their EULA was stated that you are entitled to backup your disc (that was how the things were back then). But most of the people don't bother to read that little piece of document. I still have my original discs of Fallout 1+2 and Fallout Tactics. I also have the White Label versions of the games and the Fallout Collection. Next on my list it's the gog.com version, as their version is XP and Vista compatible (and around 5-8 $, so it's like giving up on a bad meal in a fast food).
A humongous install might still make some problems if you have the White Label version. So the best thing it would be to get either a hard copy of Fallout Collection or a digital copy from aformentioned site.
So please stop accusing people. You demonstrate how knowledgeable you are in the Fallout history and in the first two games problems... not.

First of all I know exactly who Black Isle Studios, Interplay and 14 degrees east are.
You can question my knowledge on Fallout's software problems, but don't you dare question my loyalty or my knowledge of the series.

I simply wasn't sure who gets the money off the sales since Bethesda effectively owns the Fallout name.

Okay so I was wrong about my facts, I was taking from experience from my 11 friends having this problem when they illegally downloaded this game.
I didn't know about vista and xp having problems (the last time i played 1, 2 and tactics was on an old pc, discs are unusable now)

I am a massive fan of the Fallout series and have been a fan for the last 7 years (started playing when I was 10) and I'm finding it extremely hard to find the Fallout collection and im reluctant to buy via internet due to a past mishap with a credit card.

So there I admit I was jumping to conclusions about the software problems, but I do love the series and I hate people who arent willing to pay for something so brilliant.

Oooookay - this turned VERY nasty for a minute, but I see that you have apologised so I'll leave this open for the moment after cautioning you all how close you came to being bunhammered. :stare:

Thanks for the advice - I also have the black-screen glitch (and yes, I went for the Humungous install) on my Collection copy, which I bought a while back.

I bought my new, sealed copy from a small business on eBay, using PayPal, which takes the money directly from my current account.

I have quite a few editions of Fallout. The White Label, i've bought it when I've moved out, and thought that I've lost the originals ( a week later, unloading some boxes that came later, I've found my original discs). The Fallout Collection was bought in the hope that will solve the XP problems. Now I'm willing to pay another 20$ for the gog.com versions, as they say that they've managed to make the games playable on both XP and Vista.

hxxp://www.amazon.com/Fallout-Collection-Tactics-Post-Nuclear-PC/dp/B000IGE78M

Here is a place where you can find Fallout collection. It's written very clearly: in stock. As for looking in shops, I admit, it's a lot harder to find them. But I've managed.

hxxp://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/

And here you can find a digital copy, supporting XP si Vista. The site was started by the same company that developped The Witcher. The purpose is stated, there. Those people understood the fact that there is a market for those games. And they asked for the right to republish them and support them on the newer OS. Maybe they manage to secure the rights to republish Daggerfall as well and to make it playable on XP. Now that would be a treat.

P.S.: I think Interplay gets the money from the originals.

I have the Gothic series and those worked with no compatibility settings. At least on XP. As for Fo 1+2 I'd say that there are some tutorials on nma-fallout of how to make them work on XP. That should do it, until you get the versions from gog.com
Also try updating the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit. I think it's v5 now. It can be dl from the Microsoft site, provided that you have n original Windows. That's how I've got mine.
