Beliefs, Religion In Skyrim

Post » Mon Sep 13, 2010 7:02 pm

I'am just throwing out this random idea, but what if religion began to introduce religion in Skyrim? Through out Elder scrolls everywhere you go you here things about the Nine, and how great they are, or about the deadric cults and shrines laid about. However all your really able to do, is pray at one of the nine wayshrines or within the chapels to cure of your dieseses since you dont have many other options. There was now entertaining realism envolving them at all. The nine became a tad bit more important with the Knights of the Nine expansion but not by much. The daedric shrines are useful to you only for a little while until your completly finished with there quest, and they give you an item. Perhaps they should add, more effects and include divine beings into skyrim a bit more. Iam not asking for you to be able to meet them or kill them, thats to ridicoulous and would ruin it. But if they simply involved them more, then a simple quest it could be interesting. Think about it, now-a-days religon defines many people and who they are. Why not include similar things to Skyrim. What are everyones thoughts??

Religion has always been in TES. More so in oblivion, with the nine divine. Which were included in the main plot more.

Yeah a temple guild of some sort would be great.

in both daggerfall and MW my first characters were temple holy warrior types.

bring back the temple... maybe some dunmer extremists who want to reunite the tribunal.

I just hope we see a lot of the nord pantheon instead of that silly compromise known as the religion of the Nine.

Yes, with joinable "guilds" and quests. Also native Nordic religion(s) please.

Religion has been a huge part of TES....you meet gods regularly and Morrowind had three guilds related to religion (if you include the Blades/MQ missions)

I'm hoping for some kind of religious faction equivalent to the Nine Divines Cult and the Temple in Morrowind. Something involving the Nordic Pantheon.

Of course your OP touches on a point about the Elder Scrolls which is that gods in TES are very "hands-on" for lack of a better phrase. Alduin being the Nordic god of time in addition to being a world-eating dragon.

I like the idea. I always fancy the idea that the character I'm playing as worships a specific god over the others, and I think I would enjoy doing more than just a single quest for a Daedric Prince. Perhaps visiting the shrine once each day or once each week would, in time, get me a blessing or something like that, or multiple quests, or, I don't know, more interaction.

I can't say I feel the same way about the Nine though. It seems intentional that there isn't much to be seen of them. It seems like you can do just as much to worship them in Oblivion as anyone else. You stare at an altar and say "Praise Stendarr" but not a whole lot happens.

Yeah, Tribunal Temple FTW! Oblivion didn't have religion in it.

In that case, we need book-burners and devil-worshipers. Also, a town where the Lord has attained a powerful magical artifact and become a lich or something, enslaving the townspeople and summoning undead to do his bidding.

of course, I definately want this.
Morrowind did it ok. It really helps with keeping the lore alive, and with role playing different character types.

100%, most certainly... yes.
Oblivion had lots of gods and worshipers, thing is, the reason it didn't feel right is because the characters who worshiped those gods and even the Mythic Dawn had waaay low depth to each and every character. The thing that felt so right in Morrowind was that you could actually speak with the different worshipers of each religion, understand their ways, understand their belief, their culture. Mostly, I like that there were actually ranks around each camp in Morrowind, there was the Wise-Woman, the leader, his guards, his right-hand man. Plus, you could actually see each camp as a small economy of its own with its different citizens.
In such a brutal and premetive environment as Skyrim I think we should all expect to see different more in-depth cultures and beliefs around the world, even some who worship and praise the return of this... Dragon-boss beasty, can't remember his name.

I really like your ideas, this is somewhat what iam looking for, Even if they had worshippers of the dragon god Alduin, that would be interesting. as long as they didnt use this like they did mythic dawn, that would become way to reptitive and would feel like oblivion.

Yes, I would like much more religion than in past games! Dragon Age handled religion beautifully. First I would simply like to see more temples, shrines, icons, symbols, priests, worshippers, sects and cults in the game. More references to the divinities and to religious practice, superstition and morals in dialogue and lore. Some quests could have religious themes, and some politics and power struggle could be influenced by religion. And perhaps most importantly, I would love to see a stronger relationship between religion and magic in the game.

Think reality, it's like people who believe in the end of the world, some worship the devil, it all comes from reality. Ofcourse each belief's got to have a depthful history, culture, some kind of dominent body that includes the heads of this belief, varied duties such as priests, worshipers, leader etc. and don't forget, in-depth worshipers. (with Skyrim's AI though, I've got no doubt that we'll see any character, no matter which one, look more lively and have more depth to it)

More so in oblivion

I'll have to admit, I chuckled.

The religions of the Nords will lean towards the Nine, but they will definitely have many differences, as the http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-varieties-faith-empire tells us.

As an agnostic atheist, I've always found dealing with religion in video games where the gods are actually tangible and real to the NPCs and your character is very interesting, I would like to see more done with them beyond just quests.

Not necessarily concerned with an entire religion itself, but ive always been interested how these shadow-government groups pay to have subliminal stuff of the sort put into movies and videogames. I would love to see something here or there that relates to the stuff i read about. Like maybe a lay-low cult in an abandoned cave who worship An the Dragon Lord, haha.
