Win7 Service Pack 1

Post » Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:28 pm

Just a heads up folks. Many of you are might be aware that MS released Service Pack 1 to the general public yesterday. I'm among a group of people having the update fail after reboot, so you may want to consider holding off for a while. If I can can get through this, I'll post an update in here.

I downloaded it all earlier today along with a few other associated updates (like I have both an MS mouse and keyboard) - 6 updates in all. It was fine for me, no problems apart from having to reset my headphones as the default sound.

Hm, I have had the SP1 (build 7601 1.78) beta since June last year or so. It has always worked fine, receiving updates. I think I may wait for a bit though until the full version is stable.

Damn, I'm installing it now. :cryvaultboy: wish I would've seen this sooner. Wish me luck.

Good luck. One of the problems I seem to be looking at was a result of one of the troubleshooting tips...running a Windows Update reset tool. As near as I can tell now, my Win7 has zero updates installed and the only thing available from MS is SP1...all of the interim updates are gone from their site. So unless I can get this pack to work, I think I'll have the equivalent of a fresh Win7 install with all of it's security holes open.

Got it working :celebration: . Smooth as butter. Recently I had reinstalled my OS after adding a new HDD and installed all the updates that were deemed important (about 50 of them i think)

I just updated and it said something failed. I don't know what failed to install.. I should go check and see what it was now.

Yup it was Service Pack 1 that failed to update. What does it do?

It's a compilation of all of the previous critical updates. I suggest letting things go for now.

Yes, the general consensus amongst the Operating systems Gurus is to hold off on the W7 SP1 update.

This is a good site for this kind of info: http://www.askwoody.com/

Damn. It's finishing the install configuration on my desktop (albeit extremely slowly(14% in 5 hours), and this laptop wants to reboot. :brokencomputer:

Desktop configuration update failed. Time wasted: 5h 47m 13s. :cryvaultboy:

The download took forever, Windows Update said 70mb total for 4 updates including the service pack and I was on a 1.5mbps connection but it took almost 40 minutes to download. After that it took awhile to install but seemed to have done so fine. My recent programs in my start menu takes slightly longer to load but so far nothing wrong.

I'm gonna hold out until no problems come up on the TrueCrypt forum before downloading. I know that it didn't add much, but better to wait and see than run into issues with my Encrypted W7

Two things:

1. Windows update lies about the size of downloads (watching my traffic I've seen downloads significantly larger than those Windows Update reports)

2. Lots of other people are trying to download it right now too.

It said 70-893 (or so) MB. It took me about 15 try before their server would download the entire SP without timing out.

I tried it again, before reading these posts, and this time it worked. Maybe not installing it with the other 4 updates helps. It took a while, it said 0% for like 5 minutes and I was wundering if anything was happening. But all seems well. Then again, I don't know what to expect so, so far, laptop working good.

I found out I did still have my old updates installed. It was just a matter of renaming a folder marked "old" back to it's original name.

What's the point of downloading it if I've been downloading updates since I got this PC in 2009? I've gotten every critical update out there, does that mean I don't need SP1? I was hoping so.

Stayed at 0% downloaded for a minute, looked away for 10 seconds, then it starts to install... and fails. Over and over and after rebooting, failure.

I installed it some time ago from an earlier release though I forget were. (It was the full release, and not a beta, Guru3D maybe?. Damn memory.) I had no issues.

I like to keep a full copy on my memory stick. When I install Windows I leave Automatic Update off, and run SP1 first thing. Then Windows Update only wants to download 3-10 files. (Was only 3 when I first used it but know there are more now.)

Beats downloading all that crap every time.

It thinks I've uninstalled something with a third party tool, which I don't think I have, but it won't tell me which component is missing. The suggestion by Microsoft help is to pop in the Windows disc and reinstall.. meh. Maybe later...

Mine went on fine ONCE I figured out the following glitch (which is being reported by many in my situation).

If you have a multiple-OS configuration AND you are not letting Windows 7 be your boot loader, SP1 will not install without it experiencing a vague failure it never really explains to you in detail.

I hunted about online via the error code it gave me (0x800f0a12), and I found that there is some special partition thingy Win7 does and needs to access. After many others pointing out that the listed "fix" wasn't working, it came down to two basic ways to bypass the error and get it to install flawlessly.

1. IF YOU HAVE WIN7 ON ITS OWN HDD....open the PC and physically disconnect all other HDDs. Win7 boots alone and the install goes flawlessly. Reconnect the other HDDs and close the PC when you are done.

2. IF YOU HAVE WIN7 SHARING A HDD WITH ANOTHER OS....you have to fiddle with your boot loading/partition software so that it works. The following link goes to the article that spells out what others did.
