UAC

Post » Fri Sep 17, 2010 9:50 am

Right, so tonight I've been trying to install a Morrowind mod which has failed so many times it's not even funny. Anyway, earlier tonight I decided to try turning it off, this helped a little, but not a lot.

My question is if it's a bad idea to leave it off. I still haven't gotten the mod to work yet after five fresh installs though.

Thanks.

How did we cope in the heady days of XP?

define "bad". I mean, it's not like you are going to get killed by a crazed Steve Ballmer for disabling it (but he might unfriend you on facebook).

Edit: oh, and if you are using Windows 7 with the default UAC settings, it's pretty much useless anyway. malware writers already know how to get automatic elevated user permissions thanks to a couple of holes in it. So unless you are using the highest UAC setting on 7 or Windows Vista, UAC is just an annoyance with no real security benefit

He's scary, okay?! :sadvaultboy:

Works for me. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't, you know, open a hole in space-time.

Thanks. :)

You mean they came out with a new OS?
I'm still running XP because M-Audio never updated their drivers for the Delta 1010 card. [for the record, yes they did, I just checked....but XP is stable, I ain't changing]
So, sorry OP, I have no idea what UAC is, and yes, that was pretty funny DEFRON. I'd miss 'ol Steve personally....What's Facebook?

I'm an XP user, I don't need protection from myself. Not after my therapy session ended.

I miss the ocean.

Turning off UAC is the best decision you can make in life, besides adopting baby seals and clubs.

When first confronted with UAC, I had battled it so hard I killed my computer. I reinstalled the OS (7), turned it off (wait... "don't like it, lulz just turnz it off" does apply here for once!) and it has never annoyed me as much ever since. Never had security issues either up until now.

This. I turned it off the day I got my new computer with Vista and it hasn't been back on since. (No matter how many times Vista  tried to nag me to turn it back on. The day I upgraded to 7 was a good day indeed.)

IMHO, if you have more than half a brain when it comes to computer security, you can protect your computer far better than UAC can.
