Race and culture

Post » Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:06 pm

I'm sorry about the ditching argonian/kajhit thread. I was trying to make a point about race and culture, but I didn't know it was gonna create drama.

Anyways, in OBLIVION I was disappointed by how generic the beast races feel. And here I'm talking about NPC's, not my own character. In oblivion they are way too intermingled with the humans. They live in the same city, village, district... I don't see cultural representation of the race.

In real life, there are china towns, little italy, little saigon... etc. When you go there, you probably can't understand their native talking, you see buildings way different than other places, and most importantly, you see mostly chinese/italian/vietnamese people hanging out there.

I think to make the races more unique, you need to have kahjit towns, argonian towns, where you see mostly kahjit/argonians, you can't understand their native talking and the signs are unreadable... that's when you see a race standing out with its own unique culture.

I hope this thread expresses my opinion better :)

well, they have already revealed how races will be more distinguished in appearance and in locations, such as coloured clans i believe.

Leyawiin was pretty unique. The population was mostly Khajiit/Argonian, and the count was passionately racist against both.

..............Cyrodiil was the Prime of Tamriel, it subjegated the other empires and its culture spilled over onto the others, the feed back was minimal, no less that Morrowinds Culture significantly effected what you saw in racial relations, same accounts for Cyrodiil, yes they seem imperial because they are in an Imperial Province, take a walk onto another porvince and same would follow for that regions primary/Historic ethnicity.

not saying there was no room for some culture significance, but there is a plausible reason for being..

In Oblivion Cyrodiil was the cultural hub. It was supposed to be a place of racial tolerance I guess. A place for the races to come together, not segregate themselves. It would be interesting to see small racially based settlements. But I've stated before that I don't really want to see racial extremism make its way into an Elder Scrolls game. I would like to see Khajiit's expanded upon. In lore, they have a rich history. It is also said that their appearance changes from more beast-like to more human-like based on the changes in the constellations based on which birth sign they were born under. Also, I'd like to see Argonian culture mentioned more. Argonians have a very incredible culture and it's worth exploring. I want more in depth character creation and in game alteration. I want tattoos, piercings, varied clothing etc. I want to be able to find clothes from Altmeri culture and weapons from Bosmeri culture. I would love to see Dunmeri social structures be apparent in the aftermath of the Oblivion crisis.Things like this are important for in depth role playing.

I think it made sense for every race to be somewhat assimilated into Cyrodiil in the case of Oblivion. Just like it made sense for most people in Morrowind to seem downtrodden and exotic. Two completely different provinces.

That said, it sounds like Skyrim is aiming for greater cultural and esthetic variation. They've said that each Nord clan in the game has its own micro-culture and colors. And given how rugged and wild Skyrim seems, regardless of the city areas, it would make sense for people living in different regions to be a bit different.

200 years have also passed since Oblivion, so some things will no doubt have changed.

Wrong. They are bound to a lunar lattice, yes. But firstly, their species changes-not appearance. Secondly, it is based on the moons, not the stars.

i would personally like to see some sort of elven type location or clan. since they have such a history, and there are 3 types of elf, so it can still be diverse but separate from other races.

Well you're definitely right about one thing, and that's the fact that they seemed too humanoid in Oblivion. In Morrowind, the Argonians for example, seemed to walk awkwardly on these long, kangaroo-like feet, and they were constantly hunched over, making them overall look much different. They couldn't wear boots or shoes either, which I like the idea of (Could they wear shoes in Oblivion?).
As for having unique living conditions, I don't think you could be seeing that in Skyrim. In Black Marsh, sure, since it's their homeland. But in Skyrim, why would the Nords let the Argonians live in different conditions in their big cities?

Being able to see some unique settlements to different races would be nice though, such as one uniquely suited to Khajiits, built in a whole different architectural style to the Nords.

Khajiits and Argonians are already respected and accepted as one of Empire's races. Which makes them just like anyone else in this little Nirn.

Though it would be nice to explore some individual societies, but we would need a game set in Black Marsh or Elsweyr.

I've never played a Khajiit, but I would love a game set in Elsweyr. Sounds like a very cool province, plus I've always liked Khajiit. :)

While the subject's been brought up... I'd love to too. Especially the chance to see a Senche-Raht in action. A house-sized, multiple-tonned tiger that makes Freight Trains feel slow and pathetic? Yes please! (My calculations, based simply on size and Tiger performance, has them capable of running at speeds in excess of 120 MPH.)
And no world can have too many Furries (The animal-human hybrid, not the :nerd: s who want them)

Anyway... I'd love to see how the races would be adapted to the colder climates than the tropical worlds they're native too. Khajiit styled after Snow-leopards would be really fun (and fluffy!)

Indeed, snow leopard Khajiit would be cool, but probably best left to mods.
