*I am going to add a poll to this thread in hopes that it makes it a little better for people to respond to this post in a way that they just have to click a button
Lets see, Based on the idea that the Socioeconomic elements of Fallout are prolonged from the 1950's we can gather that Reconstruction continues in Japan during this previous 100 or so year time frame, which for all intense and purposes, seemed to be funded by the United States which continued its occupation of Japan post World War II up until the 2050's. The Social changes that took place with in the Fallout Universe would have been prolonged most likely. Including democratic elections and universal suffrage, though the military presence would have changed after American Armed Forces were withdrawn from the country after adopting its Seclusion/Nationalist policy (A policy that the Japanese once lived by to keep its culture protected from outside influences) along with adopting a partial Mercantilism Economic Theory to prevent products from foreign countries shipping goods that may have been exposed to the Plague. After the discovery of the plague and the nuclear attack on Tel Aviv, Isreal. I think some of the things we could have seen Japanese Society be influenced by are elements of warrior honor and dedication as a resurgence of Samurai Traditions were being experienced in Japan during the 50's with many movies like Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa(Which later was adapted into The Magnificent Seven with Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner) and also the idea that radiation could create impressive monsters such as the giant fire breathing Lizard in Gojira by Ishirō Honda (The first Godzilla movie) which both came out in 1954. The Influence of the Yukuza crime syndicates were also in full swing no doubt.
The heighten fear of an invasion from a combined Korean/Chinese Military would have no doubt brought fear to many of the Japanese people. With Korea being held back as the lap dog to China. This sort of experience would have been profound as America decided to pull its troops out of South Korea and Japan, thus allowing for great plot device, this troop withdrawal would have led to North Korea invading South Korea, possibly, over the 38th Parallel with Chinese re to unify the whole of the Korean Peninsula under a North Korean Communist government. Thus making the political situation possible for leveraging Japan into becoming forced allies with China during the Invasion of Alaska. I feel that China making Japan into a vessel State would be the probable action and then setting up a Shadow Government that slowly took over the Japanese Democratic government would have also been possible, which would have have some great plot dynamics if used by a gifted writer.
Now getting back on subject here, the resulting fear of the Japanese populace with regards to a Korean Invasion would have made becoming a vassal state very prudent for Japan. It could be gathered that China would have unleashed Korea and its own Army on Japan if they didn't act accordingly to the Chinese political demands, and as many people who have driven in downtown Seoul can attest to, giving a Korean a Drivers License and a vehicle is like giving a crazy man a knife and asking him not to kill someone. Now, getting back on track, yet again, This political action could also have been reinforced if China decided to invade Taiwan before the Invasion of Alaska, which subsequently would have taken place a few years before China attacked Alaska and made Japan its lap dog.
Now with this in mind, and the close ties American Service Men and the Japanese would have had. I feel it would have made the U.S. High Command incredibly more then having a small desire to attack China over its transgressions towards Japan by, an at the time, oppressive Chinese government. The Advisory committees would have feared the troops being exposed to the Plague and bringing it home. With this shared Paranoia, add to this the fact that the American President at the time would have decided against exposing troops to the plague and the Military action which would have great helped in influencing the Chinese in making their decision to go into Alaska. Thinking that America wouldn't help Alaska because of its blatant snub and refusal to help the South Koreans, Taiwanese, and Japanese Governments and of course the stigma that the U.S. was paranoid about the Plague. It isn't hard to imagine these once Democratic Nations now shadows of their former selves as the tools that would influence the Chinese to attack the U.S. given that they felt they could with out penalty take over Alaska. These feelings would have made many of the citizens of what were the mostly Democratic nations of South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan incredibly upset and their desire to aid the Chinese very profound. However, for some their resolve and their close American ties would make many of them seek to sabotage the Chinese forces. Now the South Koreans, Taiwanese, and Japanese who would have supported Chinese rule would possibly have made things difficult for portions of the populaces who still clung to American culture. These dilemmas could have caused many to become completely alienated by their Chinese oppressors and this would come to impact the Chinese during the invasion of Alaska as the former South Koreans, Taiwanese, and Japanese, who most likely would have been used as fodder, would desert their ranks because of their close ties with America, no doubt looking for political asylum and giving much needed intelligence about troop movements and technology.
I could go on but very little is known about what happened at this time and of course all of this is speculation, but I would like those of you who have opinions on this to please help me with these ideas.
