Order of the Lamp

Post » Sat Oct 02, 2010 12:35 pm

First if you haven't completed the Mages Guild quest-line you should probably stop reading now, it might not make sense ;)

Does anybody else feel like they are members of the Order of the Lamp rather than the MG? Please share your opinions :)
Btw: The Order of the Lamp is a knightly order founded too protect and serve the Mages Guild since loyalty cannot be bought.

Indeed it does the apparent "Mage Guild Members" do not feel like people from the Mage Guild.

...I don't really thank so. In ob's mage's guild your (supposed to be) a mage. It treats you like a mage by giving you spells, robes and equipment made for mages. Your not really a knight templar, the necromancers attack your guild, and you protect it, thats really the only similarity. The order sounds more like guards the mages guild hires and works with.

I don't play DF ;) . Found the organisation in the lore section of uesp and thought it was a better fit for your characters role in the MG quest-line than MG member.

YEs, I agree. The MG questline feels more like you're a member of the Order of the Lamp than a member of the Mages Guild.

Yeah, I suppose, but since Cyrodiil didn't have that, and since being an actual member of the Mages Guild would probably be incredibly boring for the majority of people, I think they made the right decision. Who wants to sit inside a guild all day studying magic when you could go out and fight necromancers, a small undead army, and the King of Worms?

Well, the Mages Guild quest line in Morrowind wasn't boring, but it required you to actually be a mage, and to be proficient in several different magic skills. The Oblivion Mages Guild quest line is really one of the weakest and most unconvincing parts of the game, since one can conceivably bull one's way through it, and become Archmage, without having any magic abillity at all. It's quite stupid, and it's one of the prime examples that people give when they call Oblivion "dumbed down" from the previous ES games.

There should be actual skill requirements tied to guild advancements, as in the previous ES games. Bethesda lost sight of what a "guild" is, with Oblivion.
