Need some ideas on fixing a graphical issue.

Post » Wed Oct 06, 2010 8:20 am

I have everything pretty stable now, can play 2-3 hours before a crash. But I have come across this annoying graphics issue, randomly I'll stutter and my grass will disappear for a second then reappear. Also, random textures on buildings appear low quality while the rest looks normal. Sometimes doors will be behind a low quality looking wall. It's fresh install, I've never used any texture replacers with this install. I gave up on trying to use QTP3R with a decent frame rate, which kind of boggles me since my system should be able to hand it fine. I'm pretty sure I configured Streamline and OSR correctly. Any ideas? I've run out..also if you see any other issues with my load order lemme know :read:

The grass disappearing may be a result of your FPS dropping momentarily and Streamline trying to compensate by reducing your graphics settings. When the stutter ends, SL pushes the graphics settings back up.

Pick up the Unofficial FCOM update from the FCOM thread, it's pretty much necessary with the new MMM release.

Keep an eye on when your stuttering happens, especially if it's near water. If it is, remove OOO WaterFish.

That is not necessary with OBMM or BAIN. That is just BSA Redirection, which both of those utilities already have. This issue sounds like you SL is doing heavy tweaking. Make sure your texture resolution is on high (regarding the low quality issue) and make sure you do not have unused ESPs or even BSAs sitting in your data folder. Also, deactivate green text, purple-text and italicized-text plugins. If disabling one of the latter causes the bashed patch to be deactivated, restart Wrye Bash to correct the italicizing, and continue...

One more thought: Do you have an onboard sound card or a discrete sound card (soundblaster or similar)?

You seem to have several sound mods there, and stuttering is common with onboard sound cards, particularly if near a lot of animals. You could try removing some sound mods, or look up Quiet Feet Max on TESNexus and give that a try.

I disabled the FPS Smoothing in Streamline, I still have the Sight fog thing activated though. I'm not sure if I ever reinitialized with the ini now that I think about it, I'll have to double check. It doesn't really seem to have a pattern, it seems to happen anywhere in the wild. I'll try the FCOM update.

I do have an onboard soundcard and have Quiet Feet Max installed. I'll try disable some of the sound mods.

The issue seems to get steadily worse as I play. Parts of whole towns will disappear and just the doors will show and the whole landscape seems to flicker at times. I am starting to wonder if the 10.4 Catalysts might be an issue too, maybe I should try rolling back to the 10.3s.

EDIT: and on a side note, the 4GB LAA patch is something you only want to apply on a fresh install?

The LAA patch can be applied any time, however, you must have a 64 bit O/S for it to work as intended.

I do, thanks.

So I've tried the FCOM patch, disabled the sound mods, and rolled back to the 10.3 Catalyst drivers, and I'm still getting it. Seems to occur every time when the Loading Area... message pops up. It's a new hard drive so I don't think that's the issue. I guess I'll try going back to the default settings with Streamline and OSR. Beginning to think it's just a problem I'll have to live with, I swear it wasn't happening on my last install of Oblivion though.

Did you manage to re-initialize the streamline ini in-game?

Have you Defraged?.....When ever I Rebuild my BASH Patch it is in about 200 parts. This in NO way the fault of the Program, just Windows trying to be efficient, as BASH reads a file (During rebuild) it writes in that spot, read the next file . writes in that new spot. Funny thing?..I have 212 mods my Patch was in 212 pieces. needless to say I always defrag after Building.

Edit: you don't mention speed of Processor? Also try using only ONE video card. I know svcks but worth a try. What settings are you using for OSR.

With Onboard sound try adding a Reduced Spawn for FCOM,

I haven't defragged recently, I'll try it. I have an AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.81GHz.

These are the options I changed:

bManageFPS = 0
bReplaceHeap = 1
bAllowDynamicResizing = 1

But I was still getting it with the default values too. Will try the Reduced Spawn.

Good ..the setting I have in bold is What got me Stable and smooth...now that its ON what is it set for?... Mine is heap 5 @800 for size. Default was 400 Some find even higher works IE: 1024
Dynamic Resizing is also good but can cause stutters when resizing...

I like the number 1024 better because it is a nice "round" number as far as memory goes, but if the default was 400...don't know what to say. You could certainly try it. I have no idea what Dynamic Resizing is, and I have not heard of people changing it either. These are good questions for the OSR thread though...

I don't think I changed the size at all, left it at heap 5 @450.

Bump that svcker UP...lol 1024 FTW. Mine is at 800 per a discussion with Skyranger but 1024 is also a good # AS I have a 860 C2Q with 8 gig Ram.

Edit: Heap 1 is the Fastest of the Bunch. doesn't even need a mem Setting size, But for a lot of People (including me) is unstable and crashes.

The grass disappearing is nothing strange, as far as I know its a game engine bug. It happens not only because of loading procedures.
on my PC especially when around imperial city, on the island.

Anyway, with your configuration, I would consider to drop streamline, it wastes more cpu time than it saves with its features.
and the wecops.dll does not well on my system causing more crahses than it prevented, plus a ugly gfx glitch.

A good value for the heap 5 is indeed 800 to 1024, the latter seems more a 'rounded' value in terms of memory sizes.
heap 1 causes crashes on my system too.

dynamic resizing has not improved anything yet that I would agree to have recognized,
but I think it also leads to more ctd`s, but I cant confirm, its turned off.

and be careful bout the streamline purge feature, even mods like the RBP brings its own purger with em.
running few of those isnt really necessary.

I'll second dropping WeOCPS. It cause problems for me too, and I do not think you should add it unless it really seems to be doing something for you. However, I think Streamline is fine as long as it is setup properly. Plus, the best feature is the (time) autosaving (and I like the fog too.) http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/stabilization/streamline

Tried with a fresh install with no mods at all and same thing. So I think I'm just going to chalk this up as a Crossfire issue or just a game showing it's age. The game runs smoothly and doesn't crash, played for 4 hours today and no crashes so I am content. I can live with the occasional flicker and odd textures. Thanks for all the ideas guys.

So I fixed it by setting the OSR Maximum FPS to my monitors refresh rate. Annoyed it was something that simple but happy since it's fixed.
