Bug Report : Game Crashes on Buying from Merchant

Post » Wed Oct 06, 2010 11:40 pm

***UPDATE****

PROBLEM FIXED!!!!!

please read further down to solution of fix!

Hi all!

I have another bug report- one that seems to happen only at one place and one merchant, so it a localized bug, maybe that will help with trying to figure it out-

I recently started my 3rd playthrough, (this morning) and having gotten to the traveling merchant at Mojave Outpost- he wanders up and down the hill under the giant statues shaking hands, I had purchased stuff from him before, and now i see he had new stuff to buy, including new caravan cards and a cowboy hat, so i thought i'd buy that stuff..

once i hit X to confirm purchase, the game freezes up the 360 and i have to hard reset it every time..

I tried reloading older saves up to about 4 hours ago, and somewhere along the line we got glitched i guess..

luckily it has only happened with this one merchant at this one location (so far) so i can continue playing and ignore him, as i don't really want to force my 360 to lock up more than it has to..

I also tried sleeping for a few days, then sleeping again for a few days, to ensure he would get new stuff, ( i figure maybe it was his wares that were causing it, i remember a cowboy hat being the "fix" to the strip) but no matter what it still locks up..

I hope that someone reads this that can make a difference, and it doesn't get pushed down too fast by posts of people generally complaining randomly (which they have every right to btw), we need more concise and detailed bug reports so the devs can fix this great game!

I have this same exact bug. My 360 has already frozen 6 consecutive times, all in completely different situations (night, day, merchant's sleeping, merchant's walking, etc). No matter what I do, if I buy anything from this merchant (he's wearing the stormchaser hat, and he has a full beard), either immediately after accepting purchase, or some seconds after (regardless of what screen I'm on), the game freezes. I'd be nice to fix this as he's usually stocked up on necessary items for hardcoe mode (i.e. water, etc).

EDIT: I should note, I did not come across this glitch prior to a small update my xbox asked me to install for New Vegas yesterday.

Maybe its the mojave outpost in general thats the problem? I didnt buy from the traveling merchant, but my game keeps freezing in mojave out post whenever accessing my menu, but it seems like freezing problem first started happening there

I have exactly the same issue when trying to buy stuff from the guy in the gift shop at novac. Started out ok but now it will often crash whenever I try to confirm a purchase from him.

IT IS the caravan cards that are causing the merchant freeze ups,

the bug involves the problem with caravan cards not being added to your hand, but instead being placed in your "items" category, and a persistant crash bug concerning merchants that offered one of the same cards you held in your "items" category-

the game would crash (on 360 at least) whenever you would try to purchase from a merchant who , like i said, held one of the cards you already had that was glitched into your items not your actual caravan deck, the game would crash everytime-

SO!

I read that fix for making your bought cards go into your caravan deck was to simply remove them form your inventory into a container, any container, then simply take them back out of the container and back into tour inventory, and NOW the cards will automatically be entered into your caravan deck- and guess what , that is the fix for the merchant crashes!

:)

I fast traveled to ALL the merchants that had given me freezing problems, and now, with the cards in my caravan deck and NOT in my items, NO CRASHES!!!!

:)

i am very excited to have helped figure this out, hopefully it will help with an upcoming patch!

I tried this "work around" and it did not work for me.

then you are the only one it didn't help, maybe you are missing a card in your ITEMS inventory

if it still crashes then you must have another issue or didn't follow my instructions to the letter, because this workaround is proven to work

Thanks for this, worked great!
For players who have all their caravan cards in their Item > Misc department; put them in a crate or something but just take every single card out of your inventory. Then, purchase all the cards from the trader and take all the cards out of the crate or other place where you stored them and put them back into your inventory. They will not show up in the pip-boy but will be memorized by the game. This also works for players who cannot play caravan, but have 30 or more cards.

Again, thanks for looking into it fritoz!

i'll preface this with saying i haven't played much since the first patch, because i ran into the save game DLC issue, but thought i'd post it anyways in case it helps you. i only mention it in case the first patch addressed this.

if i ever bought 5 or more caravan cards in a single transaction, my game would freeze. it was reproducible and happened every time. however, if i only bought 2-3 cards and then exited the dialogue, i could go back and buy more without a freeze. it was kinda time consuming and definitely a pain, but at least i was able to avoid that particular crash.

I don't think its the cards. I never bought any cards cause I don't play caravan. Its definitely just a problem with mojave outpost in general. My game crashed 8-10 times consecutively there...whether accessing pip boy or merchant. I fixed this problem by fast traveling to novac without doing anything else. I slept in motel, deleted saves, then started new saves. After that I didn't have a problem again for awhile

About 20 more hours into the game I did have a freezing issue again in the strip whenever I spoke to doorman/bodyguard upon entering casino. I fast traveled out, did same thing and no more crashing.

Mmm, some interesting posts here. I did give this a go, dropped all the cards into a box in my hotel room. But when I picked them all up again the game immediately locked up! I'm not sure if I missed one from my inventory to cause it to crash. Pretty sure I didn't. But I am leaving cards well alone from now on. lol
